INDIA'S FERTILITY SITUATION
The Economist carried a comprehensive coverage.
Here's the gist:
1) India has moved from “too many babies” to “too few babies.” The country’s fertility rate is now around 1.9 children per woman, below the replacement level of about 2.1, and dropping fast.
2) Some Indian states now resemble ageing rich countries. Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have fertility rates near 1.3, while Maharashtra is around 1.4, comparable to parts of Europe!
3) Population will still grow for some time. Even though births are falling, India’s population may rise from about 1.45 billion to a peak near 1.6 billion before declining sharply.
4) This fall is due to education, especially girls’ education. Schooling gives women more autonomy and choices, and it also changes family expectations and aspirations.
5) Parents are investing more in fewer children. As education becomes costly, many families prefer fewer children.
6) India may grow old before it gets rich. Falling fertility means India will soon face bigger pressures on pensions, healthcare, old-age care, and the working-age population.
7) India’s baby bust is part of a worldwide fertility decline, which may reshape migration, labour markets, economic growth, and even future global population forecasts.
