New paper! We look at ocean conditions in the Gulf of Alaska/N. Pacific during the last glacial/deglacial to try and discern whether certain time periods were more/less favorable for human movement along the coastal route from Beringia into N. America:

I also thought I’d mention that the ages for human presence at @WhiteSandNps are compatible with one of our proposed ‘viable time windows’ for a coastal migration. We highlighted the interval between 24,500-22,000 yr ago as one such window.

It was great to talk with @WeiPoints for this @nytimes piece on the new evidence that supports the 21,000-23,000 year age of the White Sands Footprints. Congratulations to @kathspringer and all the authors on their excellent work on this site!

Thousands of footprints pepper the salty expanse of White Sands National Park, preserving ancient vignettes in the sand. Now, a new study bolsters the controversial claim that humans left these tracks ~21,000-23,000 years ago!

So excited to see this new paper out today in @ScienceMagazine by @kathspringer and many other @USGS scientists! These new dates support the LGM age (21,000-23,000 yr ago) of the White Sands Footprints.

Congratulations to my @USGS colleagues: @kathspringer, Jeff Pigati, Dave Wahl, Marie Champagne, and all the other coauthors on their excellent work in getting additional pollen and OSL dates on the White Sands Footprints! This is a game-changer!
Big news: USGS scientists & partners have confirmed, with 2 new lines of evidence, that human footprints found in White Sands Nat'l Park show that people lived in North America 21-23,000 yrs ago—much earlier than previously thought!

#Fieldwork: @USGS & @uafairbanks researchers are collecting sediment cores from shallow parts of the Bering Sea to reconstruct past #BeringLandBridge vegetation & sea ice and primary productivity as the ice age receded ~8,000-13,000 years ago. #ClimateR_D@NSF
Whooaaa check out this cool new paper out today in @NatureGeosci 😎 AND it's open access?! Absolutely thrilling.

One of my favorite finds in #Rome after #INQUARoma2023 wrapped up, was the Pietro Canonica museum in the @VillaBorghese. The funerary monuments (such as The Gust of Wind) were particularly haunting, and #TheAbyss sculpture was truly a masterpiece. Plus I was the only one there!
Julie Brigham Grette, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, speaks today (VII/19) at 14:00 CEST. This #INQUARoma2023 Plenary talk will be livestreamed at this link:
