One of the things I’ve found so dismaying and disheartening over the past 20 years hasn’t been the fact that there are so many grifters and downright criminals embedded in our government. In truth, they’ve always been there, and we’ve successfully dealt with them over the entire history of this country.

What I’ve truly found demoralizing has been my fellow Americans’ rapidly developing inability to discern between such individuals and those fighting against them. Our intransigent resistance to being moved from an emotional reaction, devoid of any real forethought, planning, logic, or anything else remotely resembling a rational connection of synapses, has left us at the mercy of every evil shyster villain from George Soros to the Ayatollah to Walz, Obama, Newsom, and company.

Childlike naivety and emotionalism are charming in limited quantities in children, but it is a civilization killer when found in the larger portion of a nation’s voting citizens.

We are about to empathize and care ourselves out of the freedom we’ve shed so much blood and spent so much treasure to keep over the last 250 years, and I’m at a loss as to how this gets fixed.

June 6th, 1944.

The English Channel is angry and half the men in the landing craft are seasick. Diesel fumes mix with saltwater and vomit while rifles are checked for the fifth or sixth time by hands that need something to do. Nobody talks much anymore because the jokes have all been told and the bravado has finally burned away somewhere behind the English coast.

You are nineteen years old and carrying more weight than you’ve ever carried in your life. You don’t know it yet, but it’s the most weight you will EVER carry in this life. However long or short it may be.

Your rifle rests across your knees. Your life hangs from a few pounds of steel, wood, and training. Somewhere beyond the gray horizon sits a continent that has spent five years tearing itself apart, and in a few minutes you are going to step into the middle of it.

Across from you sits another kid. He can’t be much older than you. His jaw is clenched. His knuckles are white around his weapon. Neither of you says a word because there is nothing left to say.

Then your eyes drift toward his shoulder.

That red numeral catches your eye: “1”.

You’ve seen it a thousand times before. In barracks hallways, on training fields, in motor pools, and on long marches. It never meant much beyond belonging to the same outfit.

Now it means everything.

Because in a few minutes the world is going to ask something terrible of both of you, and there is comfort in knowing that whatever waits on that beach, neither of you will face it alone.

The historians will eventually reduce this day to arrows on maps and casualty figures. Politicians will give speeches. Journalists will write books. None of that exists inside the landing craft.

What exists is fear, and duty.

What exists is the understanding that courage was never the absence of fear. Courage was always charging into the maelstrom anyway.

The shoreline emerges through the smoke. You can see flashes now. You can hear the distant percussion of artillery. Men stop checking their equipment because there is no point anymore. Whatever mistakes were made are already made. Whatever prayers were going to be said have already been said.

The coxswain throttles down.

The boat grinds forward.

The ramp is about to drop.

Into the abyss.

Overlord.

You can’t have a democracy without voter ID.

Trying to is like running a bank that hands out cash to anyone who says they have an account or boarding a plane where the gate agent just takes your word that you bought a ticket.

80% of voters want it. If they weren’t cheating, they’d happily implement it so people always trusted the results. Conclusion: They’re cheating.

🇺🇸As the 82nd anniversary of D-Day nears, I’d like to share a story.

The logistics/medical battalion I commanded in the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan held the lineage and honors of the Division’s original medical battalion (which was company-sized on the night of June 5, 1944).

On the night of June 5, 1944, medics from the 307th Airborne Medical Company jumped in with the Division HQ, and immediately started treating casualties.

Meanwhile, the main body of the Company was loaded up on gliders and landed in a swampy area on the Cotentin Peninsula, where by midnight they had formed up and established a triage and clearing station for the stabilization and evacuation of casualties. On the evening of June 6, Major (Doctor) William H. Houston, the Company commander, was KIA due to enemy action. More reinforcements landed by glider on D+1, and for the next month the 307th stayed right at the front, stabilizing casualties and evacuating them to England.

I went to Normandy a couple of years ago, and did a deep dive on all things 82nd and 101st. As part of that, I hired an English historian to research the 307th, and we visited the sites where they landed and where they established the constantly-moving medical clearing stations.

Below is a picture of a farm building in Normandy that is now a residence. That hand you see is my historian’s, and the picture his iPad shows is the 307th’s clearing station in that same farmhouse.

I thought that was kind of amazing.

When I went to Normandy, I was surprised at how much respect the locals still have to this day for the D-Day warriors, and military tourism there is absolutely thriving, even among Gen Z. (Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan are big reasons, I am told.)

I think it is great that the history of that day lives on so strongly. Never forget.

It is hard to contain my delight at the below.

I gave a speech a few years ago to a FedSoc symposium the main point of which was that members of FedSoc talk about the rule of law a lot, but many of those same members at large law firms routinely watched as discrimination on the basis of race and sex in hiring and staffing became the norm.

"The client is asking for it" became the excuse for knowing and willful violations of civil rights laws. "If we don't do it, X big firm will get the case."

And every time somebody who gave lip-service to the "rule of law" let that all-firm email or staffing email or client "diversity report" go by without saying "you know this is all illegal and I do not think we should do it," (which puts a stop to it immediately because now there is an email from a lawyer saying it is illegal), the integrity of the legal profession was undermined.

Believe it or not, some of the big firm lawyers in the audience complained about my speech. Cowards.

Well, goodbye and good riddance, Diversity Lab. You and your ilk allowed a GC to turn to a young white lawyer I know and tell him to his face he wouldn't be on the case because of the color of his skin.

Hello to conservative lawyers finally coming out of the woodwork to acknowledge what they knew was illegal for decades.

And a two-finger salute to the lawyers who complained when I called their cowardice out.
