🇪🇷ERITREA’s Week Review at the UNGA81

Eritrean delegation led by H.E. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated actively in the High-Level Week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, advancing Eritrea’s diplomatic engagement and positions on regional, continental and global issues.

This morning, 28 September, Minister Osman delivered Eritrea’s national statement at the UNGA81 General Debate, presenting Eritrea’s perspectives on international peace and security, #sovereignty and territorial integrity, the #Horn of #Africa and #Red #Sea region, genuine #multilateralism, development and other issues of international concern.

Throughout the week, the delegation participated in high-level #UN meetings and interventions, including the 40th Anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, the High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, the plenary on sea-level rise, and the 50th Annual Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the G77 and China. Eritrea emphasized sovereign equality, self-reliance, equitable development, South-South cooperation and a more representative multilateral system.

The delegation also held a series of bilateral and high-level meetings with UN officials and senior government representatives, including UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the Foreign Ministers of #Algeria, #Burkina Faso, #Egypt, #Sudan, #Sweden, #Oman, #Singapore, #Andorra and #Greece, as well as UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, #European #Union special representative and #UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell.

Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam, in her capacity as one of the 21 Vice-Presidents of UNGA81, presided over a plenary session during the general debate.

Discussions covered bilateral relations, regional peace and security, the Horn of Africa, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and issues of mutual interest.

Eritrea also contributed to other high-level side events, including the launch of the State of Africa’s Children 2026 report.

The week-long participation reflected Eritrea’s continued active, principled and substantive engagement at the United Nations, combining the national statement, multilateral interventions, bilateral diplomacy and participation in key international forums while advancing Eritrea’s national and regional priorities.

The US has finally removed the unilateral sanctions on Eritrea today.

Congratulations to the people and Government of #Eritrea for their steadfastness, resilience, and principled approach that made this development a reality.

The unilateral sanctions imposed on Eritrea by the Biden Administration in 2021 were unwarranted and caused undue damage on Eritrea. Now that they have been removed, we welcome this positive gesture and corrective measures taken by the Trump Administration.

Today’s move by the US should mark the beginning of a new chapter in the Eritrea-US relations, that we envision to be grounded in #sovereign respect, mutual interests, and the pursuit of a mutually beneficial #partnership. 🇪🇷🇺🇸

Public Diplomacy

Mathew Patrick Thomas, National Committeeman (RNC) and Finance Co-Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party, met with the Eritrean Association’s board members and community leaders and discussed local, national, and international issues.

In his post on fb, he shared that he learned more about Eritrea, experienced its rich culture, and enjoyed its outstanding cuisine.

With over 20 years in politics, he said he could honestly state that he has rarely met a group as professional, welcoming, thoughtful, and engaged as the Eritrean community. He described their impressive Cultural and Community Center as a true reflection of their vibrant community.

He concluded by saying he believes this meeting marks the beginning of a long friendship and looks forward to working together for years to come.

Congratulatory Message from President Donald J. Trump

In his message, President Donald Trump said that the American people join him in congratulating the people and Government of #Eritrea on the 35th anniversary of Eritrea’s independence, May 24. He also expressed respect and admiration for the steadfast spirit and resilience of the Eritrean people, as well as for their dedication to Eritrea’s national sovereignty.

President Donald Trump further noted that, consistent with the sentiment he expressed in his letter to President Isaias last year, and with the previous era now behind us, he believes the time is right to move forward and work together on shared peace and prosperity across the #Horn of #Africa and the #RedSea.

Messages of Congratulations

Leaders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Republic of Malta, Republic of South Africa, and Republic of Pakistan have sent messages of congratulations to the people and Government of Eritrea on the occasion of the 35th Independence anniversary.

In their messages, King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, President Myriam Spiteri Debono of the Republic of Malta, President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa of the Republic of South Africa, and Mr. Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Chairman of the National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, congratulated the people and Government of Eritrea on the occasion of the Independence Day anniversary and expressed their goodwill.

They also conveyed their best wishes for good health to President Isaias Afwerki, as well as peace and prosperity to the Eritrean people, and expressed their countries’ readiness to develop mutual relations and cooperation with Eritrea.

Today, our Embassy proudly participated in the highly successful Passport DC event from 9am to 4pm, welcoming nearly 2,500 visitors to experience the rich #culture and #heritage of #Eritrea. Guests enjoyed authentic Eritrean cuisine, a traditional coffee ceremony, historical exhibitions, music, and received QR code cards to learn more about Eritrea through our website.

The event brought together mostly #Americans, along with many other #international visitors, all eager to discover and learn more about Eritrea. A wonderful day of cultural exchange, friendship, and connection.

We were also honored to welcome Eritrean-American comedian and actress #Tiffany #Haddish along with her crew, Kimberly Bassett Washington DC Secretary, and Jan Du Plain the liaison of the over 190 Embassies, who visited the Embassy today added to the spirit of this special occasion.

This success was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Embassy staff in close coordination with the vibrant #Eritrean #community in the #Washington, DC area.
