Today Is International Safe Abortion Day - September 28th, 2026 And We Are Not Whispering. We Are SHOUTING.
As AWAC marks 11 YEARS of feminist resistance, we stand in Solidarity In Action to Advance Reproductive Justice and Demand Health Systems that Deliver Comprehensive Abortion Care for Marginalized women such as Women Sex Workers, Gender Expansive People, among others!
Abortion Care Is Health Care. Period.
Accurate Safe Abortion Information Saves Lives.
Our bodies are not battlegrounds for patriarchy, the state, and imperialist moral panics.
Bodily Autonomy Is Non-Negotiable.
We see the pushback for what it is. The so-called African Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values is a FAKE CHARTER - a patriarchal, anti-rights manifesto dressed in "African values" to control women and gender-diverse persons. It weaponizes culture and sovereignty to criminalize our choices, to deny us care, to let us bleed and die from unsafe abortion.
We call it out: #FakeAfricanCharter
This charter is not African. It is not about family. It is an organized backlash against our hard-won SRHR gains. It seeks to roll back our rights to safe abortion and entrench systemic violence against women in all our diversities.
We refuse. We resist. We will not go back.
No law, no fake charter, no pulpit will stop us from claiming what is ours: The right to decide, to not decide, to live, to thrive.
Safe Abortion Now! Reproductive Justice Now!

As we continue our climate series, today we highlight why we should care about climate change, because its impacts are already being felt in Uganda, yet not everyone is experiencing them in the same way.
Women sex workers and other key populations face heightened vulnerabilities to the consequences of climate change. Climate disasters like floods block pathways to health facilities and clinics, making it difficult to access essential SRH and HIV services, including contraceptives, post-abortion care and HIV medicines.
Extreme heat and drought further deepen climate injustice, disrupting access to essential health services, livelihood and food security.

This week, we joined our partner, @themamanetwork in a global campaign on destigmatizing abortion. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the need for collective action to ensure abortion is recognized as essential reproductive healthcare. No life should be lost due to restrictive laws and polices that criminalize abortion

The AWAC team is currently on the move across more than 10 districts, walking alongside communities, listening, learning, and building SRHR leadership from within. At the heart of this journey is a bold and necessary mission: identifying and training female sex worker leaders as Expert Clients and District Focal Persons while equipping them with the knowledge, tools, information, and confidence to serve as strong advocates for comprehensive care, including SMMA and PAC services. These Expert Clients and District Focal Persons are trained to become trusted bridges between communities and health services, ensuring that no one is left to navigate health systems alone. From one district to another, we are witnessing leadership rise, voices grow louder, dignity restored and pathways to care taking shape.

We were thrilled today to host the leaders of our grassroots community in an awareness raising session on the Lenacapavir PrEP injection. It’s such an honor and a rich experience to hear the insights through voices the community have over this new biomedical HIV prevention innovation, and ways to support its upcoming rollout.

Today was truly powerful. We had the privilege of hosting a side event, “Defying the Pushback,” at the Women Deliver Conference 2026, and it created a meaningful space for honest, lived conversations. Voices from the sex work community and gender-expansive individuals from Uganda and Nepal shared deeply personal experiences that have shaped their resilience and resistance against the rollback on the SRHR. We also heard inspiring perspectives from partners like Global Fund for Women, who spoke about on how they have embraced progressive, feminist, and participatory grant-making such that the assistance reaches those that need it most. This was further enriched by insights from Act Church of Sweden, highlighting how they have supported partners working in humanitarian contexts and standing on the frontlines to defend SRHR. This discussion felt like a grounded, hopeful conversation about resilience, solidarity, and reimagining how we can continue to support SRHR movements through a collective action to counter.

Today, we held a Community Implementation Focus Group (CIGF) meeting to review visibility materials, including posters aimed at raising awareness about cervical cancer among female sex workers and other marginalized women in Uganda.
The discussion focused on ensuring that posters and other communication materials accurately reflect the realities and settings of female sex workers, while clearly communicating the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer, its stages, risk factors, prevention measures, and available treatment options.

Staying informed is critical in responding to the Ebola outbreak. Here are important updates and guidance to help protect our communities through awareness, prevention, and timely action. Let’s work together to stop the spread.

Let us remain vigilant and exercise highest level of caution amidst the recent Ebola outbreak. Regularly wash your hands with clean water and soap, sanitize frequently, and avoid contact with an infected person, animals, birds, bodily fluid of an infected person, or dead bodies. Report any signs or symptoms to the nearest health facility immediately. Together, we can prevent the spread of Ebola and protect our communities.

📢 NEW BLOG POST: Defying the Pushback & Reclaiming Power!
🔥We are thrilled to share our official debrief and deep reflection on the Women Deliver 2026 Conference held in Narrm (Melbourne), Australia! As the world's most significant stage for gender equality , this year's theme, "Change Calls Us Here", served as a massive rallying cry for global solidarity. For AWAC Uganda, this wasn't just another conference; it was a radical platform to disrupt the shadows and amplify the voices of grassroots sex workers, women in humanitarian displacement, and the LBQ womxn community.

How much do you know about the Protection of Sovereignty Act, 2026?
Today, we were pleased to host our friends and partners from the Civic Advisory Hub together with our grassroots member organization, CEMINET–Kitgum, for an important awareness-raising webinar on the recently passed Protection of Sovereignty Act, 2026.
From this webinar, we note that there is a growing concern about the possible impact of the law on human rights, civic space, and community organizing in Uganda. We also reflected on how the Act could affect ordinary NGO work, threaten the existence of safe spaces that provide key population-friendly services, and introduce harsh penalties, including imprisonment of up to 20 years for non-compliance.
We shall continue sharing more information, guidance, and analysis on the implications of this Act through our upcoming communications.
