Millions rushed to express their sympathy, many shedding tears over the scene of deprivation experienced by this small creature. The story topped "trending" lists for days under emotional headlines highlighting the nobility of animal feelings.
​However, behind this manufactured global clamor lies a terrifying and painful ethical gap.
​While the world watched the monkey’s movements and its attachment to a toy, more than 20,000 children in Gaza—according to reports from UNICEF and health authorities—were facing death through bombardment, hunger, and cold. These children did not even find a doll to cling to; instead, they found the rubble of their homes and the shrouds of their siblings.
​The paradox lies in the fact that the feelings of the Western world were stirred profusely for a monkey behind the bars of a reserve, while those same feelings froze before children behind the bars of a siege.
​The world’s disregard for the stories of thousands of Palestinian children who have had limbs amputated or lost entire families—contrasted with the celebration of the monkey’s story—reveals a structural flaw in the Western moral compass. The suffering of the Palestinian child has been transformed into a passing statistic in news bulletins, while the suffering of the monkey has become a humanitarian story that touches hearts.
​This double standard confirms that the criterion for empathy is no longer "pain" itself, but rather the identity of the sufferer.
​A world that weeps for a monkey missing its mother, yet remains silent about a child screaming under the rubble, is a world that does not represent—but rather exposes—the true beast that was merely cloaked in the words "civilization," "humanity," "mercy," and "justice."
