I know little about a lot of random things. Supposed to be doing economics but currently engaged in public health work. Previously @TheEIU and @LSEEcon
@MarriottBonvoy Have had an extremely disappointing experience. Recently stayed at W Abu Dhabi--and the hotel managed to misplace my luggage from their cloak room.
Hopefully there can be some speedy resolution.

Just trying to reach out to the hotel has been a tedious task, not withstanding the replacement cost I have to bear to replace all the items in the interim

@TolasariaArchit@sreedhari_desai See that depends on your personal frame of ethics. One may say laws exist for a reason and wider social good, so it is important to follow them. You feel jaywalking isn't harmful, but that may just be a slippery slope to more legal violations. #ISBRL
@Shiv_gupta2023@sreedhari_desai But is it ethical? They mine personal data often without consent and use it to tailor recommendations to maximize their profit. Their intention in this process is purely to earn money--how is that ethical? #ISBRL
@AaronVijayan@sreedhari_desai But human biases always creep in, it's hard to keep conversations objective unless data-led. You may have a manager who has a favorite junior and all. How can organizations ensure that equity is maintained in such processes? #ISBRL
@ShrutiTiwary06@sreedhari_desai But what is the duty of a business? Is it to earn business profit? If that is the case then you can justify unfair business practices because you are delivering value to shareholders. #ISBRL
@Aniki7376 I don't think Utilitarianism isn't without its pitfalls. That way you can justify anything--theft to earn money, just because eyes on the prize. But that doesn't mean it is the moral thing to do. #ISBRL
@janeitorial I believe concerns around equity and procedural justice are also important while discussing this. Should those with the ability to pay get to jump the queue at the hospitals or do you provide oxygen to who came first? #ISBRL
@ChetluruRevanth Ethically it might also depend on how you define ‘life’. Is it being a functioning member of the society and living up to your potential or is it simply just surviving, regardless of your condition? #ISBRL
@ayush_c_15@sreedhari_desai I think you’re missing the new jobs created and overall welfare brought to society through innovation too. For example agricultural innovation, ultimately it helps solve global hunger. A blanket opposition to innovation is a very luddite argument! #ISBRL
@AbhilashKopalli@sreedhari_desai I don’t think utilitarianism would prescribe capital punishment for heinous crimes. If the justice system works and you can reform criminals then capital punishment just leads to loss of a functioning member of the society. Not sure about this one! #ISBRL
@tanvigarg666 This is exactly like the Fluoride example in class! I think it will always involve a cost-benefit analysis which can be very subjective when you try to place a value on the lives of people. #ISBRL
@iadityasomani@sreedhari_desai I think reservation in India tries to give people a similar starting basis, but beyond that is it still the responsibility of the employer/university to ensure parity in outcomes? Where should we draw the line as a society? #ISBRL
@ShiviMajithia I think procedural justice also includes an assumption that the process being followed is fair and equitable. But in the George Floyd example when biases skew the process unfair, is it moral to still follow them? Wouldn't the moral thing be to oppose them? #ISBRL
@Satyam_Sinhaa Rationalisation can play a big part in that--you can believe wars are ethical if you wage them to protect a right such as freedom, or justify it as self-defense. That's how most countries in the past have justified wars. Guess it depends on where you are coming from #ISBRL
@doll_bajaj@TheKenWeb Isn't it still utilitarian if it is also focusing on the environmental impact--environmental ramifications affect all so a marginal improvement there is good for everyone? #ISBRL
@TolasariaArchit@sreedhari_desai What about reformative justice? People can be reformed over time and come out a changed person. You can't tag someone as a criminal forever right? #ISBRL
