Victims of forced conscription should not be treated the same as those who chose to join a terrorist organization.

Today I joined members of the Iranian-Canadian community on Parliament Hill to demand that the government stop targeting conscripts and deport real IRGC terrorists.

Many of these conscripts have been among the most vocal opponents of the IRGC.

Conservatives have already shown the government a simple legislative fix to this problem. Thus far, Liberals have failed to adopt that fix.

Hundreds of Iranian families are facing fear and uncertainty because their history of compulsory conscription is being used against them in their immigration cases.

These are not abstract cases. They are parents, children, professionals, students, and members of our communities who have built their lives in Canada.

We are not asking Canada to compromise national security. We are asking for fairness, due process, and a clear distinction between those who willingly served the IRGC and those who were forced into conscription.

🚨 CBC NEWS: Iranian told he may have to leave Canada over past IRGC Mandatory Conscription
This is not an isolated case.
Hundreds of Iranian nationals are facing possible inadmissibility and removal over past mandatory conscription in Iran.

Canada has consistently assured the Iranian-Canadian community that conscripts would not be affected by the IRGC listing and that cases would be assessed individually.
Yet what we are witnessing today raises a deeply troubling question:

Are those assurances being honoured in practice?

Families who built their lives in Canada are now facing uncertainty, inadmissibility findings, and the possibility of removal because of mandatory service they were compelled to complete.

🇨🇦 Mandatory conscription is not membership. Conscription is not ideological affiliation. Canada must keep its promise.

This report by @StewGlobal is alarming for many Iranian Canadians who fight for a free Iran and are deeply concerned about actual IRGC affiliates operating in Canada.

Instead of serious, actionable measures against the IRGC, we see reports like this.

Ordinary Iranians are being targeted and put at risk of deportation based solely on a history of mandatory conscription, while the son of a former Iranian vice-president received over $2M in Canadian government contracts.

As Global News reports: “military service is compulsory in Iran, but the children of high-level regime members can get a pass” if studying at Western universities.

Canada must stop targeting the wrong people and wasting resources pursuing innocent former conscripts while failing to properly address real regime-connected individuals and IRGC affiliates.

Punish ordinary conscripts while regime-connected families receive Canadian support? Where is the consistency?

In the hearing session conducted on June 12, 2024, chaired by @AliEhsassi to discuss the listing of the IRGC, some attendees raised concerns about the impact of this designation on former conscripts who had no choice or control over their conscription. Given the urgency of listing the IRGC for some attendees, and in an attempt to remove this supposed barrier, certain accusations were unfairly ascribed to conscripts to justify labeling them as members. In this video, we will demonstrate how this claim repeated by several attendees originated from an unexamined and baseless reference to a misinterpreted statement. Check this video out to see how a misrepresented claim has been repeatedly referenced in multiple publications and misleadingly cited over time, giving it an air of legitimacy. And now the same falsified, unexamined claim has been wrongfully used to decide about the lives of thousands of former IRGC conscripts and their family members.
