Did a little more research on this singularly ill timed decision by the AIFF to change the name to Football Federation of Bharat and mandate a 4 minute song(which FIFA will never allow for internationals) before each AIFF match.
And it turned out that neither of these items were actually on the agenda before the meeting, and came as a surprise to most in the meeting. And these items were never put on vote or passed.
But according to the AIFF's own press release the same day, it seemed to be a done deal.
"It was further resolved that a proposal be submitted to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) for renaming the All India Football Federation (AIFF) as the Football Federation of Bharat (FFB).
It was also decided that the National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' and the National Song 'Vande Mataram' shall be played before the commencement of all football matches conducted under the aegis of AIFF."
The fact is that the AIFF elections are in a few months, and this is an excellent way to make sure that this election will be fought on name changes and national songs, when what it should really be decided on is how well or badly the current lot is running the sport and whether they should or should be replaced.
It is also a terrible disservice to many sincere AIFF state representatives who would have been just as surprised by this sudden development, and who would needlessly be the object of ire and ridicule among their own constituents.
There is a way of changing all of this. But it starts with at the state level with each sport and a collective will to end this nonsense and lack of accountability.

But today he is 85 years old and clearly facing health challenges, He often struggles to walk properly and speaking for long periods also seems difficult, Rajya Sabha needs leaders who can actively participate in debates, speak strongly and represent public issues regularly

At this stage, Pawar has already had more than enough opportunities, positions and political power

Priyanka Chaturvedi represents a different kind of leadership

She is vocal, energetic and active almost 24/7 on public issues, She regularly raises concerns in Parliament, speaks on national debates and connects with people directly, She understands modern problems like youth employment, digital policy, women’s rights and the concerns of younger generations

Gyaan time: MESSI or MESS? Wonderful to have the great Lionel Messi in India. BUT here is the catch: India now ranks a low 142 in world FIFA rankings, ISL abandoned, Indian football is a total MESS. Having Messi in town will lead to photo ops for netas/celebs and some temporary crowd excitement but can some of that enthusiasm/sponsor interest also be channeled into the sport please? Else we will remain what we were for decades: a nation of sports watchers not players!🙏

I have no idea what happened in Kolkata in the Messi event. But I couldn't help thinking that we Indians really do not like sport. We like stars.
What else could explain the millions, and I mean millions of dollars we spend to fly in superstars, when they will not even play a proper match.
I am ok with paying whatever it takes to bring in a top football team to play in India, like Messi did in 2011 or Tata Steel did for a long time in the 80s and 90s.
But getting them to come here just to shake hands and pose for pictures defies all reason. They will sell real estate, take pictures with every sponsor and go back with more money in two days than say the I League used to spend in a year.
I don't blame the organizers for getting into this, its a really profitable business, because the politicians are getting serious free mileage and the sponsor is spending his, or his company's money to fulfil his childhood fantasy. The journalists are overawed just to be there with a generational superstar, lots of folks are spending a reported Rs 10 lacs for a handshake and a photo op and the real estate guys are busy pushing deals.
That's millions of bucks spent on a footballer, whose closest attempt at action would be kicking a few footballs at the crowd or dribbling for a few minutes. Money that is desperately desperately needed elsewhere in actual football. Real camps, matches, ground level sponsorships. Or even to revive a football league.
And then we expect India to be better at sport!

If cricket wants to take its place as a genuinely global sport, it must stop this farcical business of ensuring India and Pakistan are always in the same group.
All are aware that it is a money spinner for the broadcasters, and that all the member countries approve & benefit, but it risks not being taken seriously in comparison to other global sports.
If you did this with Argentina Brazil in football or even USA France in basketball, there would be an uproar.
Take the hit once, and you'll discover that cricket is bigger than just one rivalry, which currently is not even close to being the most riveting rivalry in the sport. And the sport will gain so much more credibility as a truly Olympic sport.

Communities thrive on local institutions. I didn’t fully grasp what that meant until my MUPP 501 urban planning course, when I realised even neighbourhood business can function as community institutions.

Today I understand it and New Delhi nails it with its neighbourhood pub/bar culture. In Saket, Greater Kailash, Vasant Vihar etc. every pocket has its own spot that becomes a community hub (what we call Adda). You meet new friends, you learn something new, and sort of develop your own circle.

In most other Indian cities, this doesn’t exist. It’s either hyper-commercial with overpriced everything or superbly cheap dimlit dens with blue-collared men drinking their sorrows away.

In US and EU, I experienced people would just show up for a game or political announcement or even daily news. I had my go to pub in Pilsen, Chicago, where I would just go sometimes, have coffee, gobble waffles and write my assignments. It was sort of my JJs diner. Saw Barca-Madrid Game at one of the bars in Madrid

Anyway, we need to bring the concept of middle pub/bars places to Indian cities, so that young people come, talk and be more interactive.
