Venkatesh Maha’s @mahaisnotanoun ‘Rao Bahadur’ is a unique, original, imaginatively done satire that gives the finger to patriarchal traditions

A few weeks after ‘Sing Geetham’, Telugu cinema hits it out of the park once again with a totally out-of-the-box experience.

A rich man is haunted by memories and is kept alive by one toxic burning desire. This premise spirals into a beautifully surrealistic message movie about social conditioning, with a career-best performance from Satyadev Kancharana @ActorSatyaDev

The film is a tad overstuffed, but that is a very, very small issue given what it achieves.

I don’t HATE @mahaisnotanoun for making #RaoBahadur and not making @ActorSatyaDev act — who didn’t act, but DISAPPEARED into the character in multiple DISSOLVES … The makeup, costumes, production design make every frame look LOCALLY INTERNATIONAL … 99% of films are made from MEMORY of other films but #RaoBahadur is made from ZERO MEMORY IMAGINATION and OPTIMAL LEVEL CONVICTION

The director @mahaisnotanoun's credit, 'A Maha Chithram' at the end of the movie slowly changes to 'A Telugu Chithram'. Unfortunately, not many films releasing these days can say that out loud with pride. But, #RaoBahadur certainly can proclaim it without the slightest hesitation. It can say it louder than most and wear it like a badge of honor. I m seeing a lot of people admiring the film for its sheer audacity but it would be better to rather not dwell on that because there's so much more to appreciate in the film's ideas, storytelling and its identity than just Venkatesh Maha's willingness to take wild swings. I have so much to say about this movie and I can't wait only.

Not regular commercial fare, but a treat for lovers of character-driven, offbeat cinema.
