On 23.06.2026, at Jantar Mantar, during the CJP protest, Sh Sanjay Kumar (38), a resident of Ghaziabad, sustained a head injury by Kada worn by one of the alleged during a scuffle.

He was medically examined by Doctors of RML Hospital, and the injuries were opined to be simple in nature. The injuries were made by kada and not by any weapon. The misinformation regarding crack in skull is not supported by facts/ MLC and is completely baseless.

On his statement, a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at PS Parliament Street. They were detained from the site and during investigation, Suraj Kumar (24) and Swatantra Bhardwaj (21) were served notices as per law and were interrogated. Due legal action has been taken, and chargesheet would be filed before the competent court soon.

Any allegation of undue influence or interference in the matter is factually incorrect and baseless.

The matter has been dealt with strictly in accordance with law and procedures.

The protective thread is older than the stories we now tell about it.

Long before it became a brightly coloured rakhi exchanged between siblings, it was a raksha-sutra - a consecrated bond of protection. Vedic texts already speak of the pratisara and kautuka, sacred threads tied on the wrist or arm during rites on the full-moon day of Shravana. Priests bound them on kings. Wives bound them on warriors leaving for battle. The gesture itself was simple and profound: I bind this thread so that harm cannot reach you.

The Bhavishya Purana gives the ritual its name and its most enduring scriptural form. After twelve years of war the gods had lost. Indra, king of heaven, stood defeated. On the advice of Brihaspati, his wife Indrani - Shachi - prepared a thread on Shravana Purnima, charged it with mantra, and tied it to his right wrist. The gods rose again and prevailed. That thread was called raksha-bandhan, the bond of protection. The rite was not originally a sibling ceremony. It was a wife sending her husband into danger with a living prayer on his arm.

Another current of the same river flows through the story of Lakshmi and King Bali. When Vishnu remained in Sutala as Bali’s guardian, Lakshmi came in disguise on the same full-moon night, tied the protective thread, and accepted the great asura as her brother. In return she asked only that her husband be allowed to return. The mantra still chanted today : Yena baddho Bali raja danavendro mahabala, remembers that moment. Protection here moves across the boundary of blood and even across the boundary between god and devotee.

The epics add further strands. Before Abhimanyu entered the Chakravyuha, Kunti tied a mantra-infused thread on her grandson’s wrist. Draupadi tore a strip from her own sari to bind Krishna’s bleeding finger; he never forgot the debt of that single piece of cloth. In each telling the thread carries the same intention: may this person come home.

Over centuries the rite gathered these stories and slowly centred on the sibling bond. What had begun as a general act of protection - priest to king, wife to husband, grandmother to grandson found its most intimate and lasting home in the relationship between sister and brother. The sister ties the thread and offers her blessing; the brother accepts the bond and the duty that travels with it. The form we recognise today is the result of that long gathering, not a sudden invention.

In 1905 the same thread was lifted into public history. When Lord Curzon’s partition of Bengal was to take effect on 16 October - a day that fell on Shravana Purnima, Rabindranath Tagore called on Hindus and Muslims across the province to tie rakhis on one another. The private ritual became a public declaration: we will not be divided. Streets in Calcutta, Dhaka and Sylhet filled with people binding the thread of protection across communities. The festival that had always spoken of safeguarding those we love was asked, for a moment, to safeguard a people.

From the Vedic thread to Indrani’s gift, from Lakshmi’s quiet diplomacy to the streets of 1905, the ritual has never been only one story. It is a living practice that keeps adding layers while the original purpose remains unchanged: to bind protection, affection and responsibility onto the wrist of another human being.
