I just met the Muslim family from #UttamNagar whose home was bulldozed after the recent communal tensions. As we sat with them, the woman of the house narrated what had actually happened that day. She spoke about how a 20-year-old man named Prince allegedly threw a balloon at her aunt and tried to molest her. When the family protested, he later returned with a group of people and a scuffle broke out. Tarun was among those who came with the group, and in the chaos that followed, he died.

Listening to her, one thing kept echoing in my mind: did anyone in authority, or any of the loud “influencers” who rushed to give their verdicts, ever bother to come here and hear this side of the story? Or was the judgment already written before anyone cared to listen?

Shaheen, while speaking about the media coverage surrounding Tarun’s murder, alleged that the narrative being presented is one-sided. She claimed that only one version of the story is being highlighted, while her family’s perspective and the difficulties they are facing are not being given attention.

At the same time, Shaheen strongly rejected all the allegations that are being levelled against her family members. She stated that many claims circulating in the media are incorrect and misleading.

Shaheen also brought forward certain facts and points which, according to her, have not been discussed in the ongoing coverage of the case. She urged that their side of the story should also be heard so that the situation can be understood in a balanced manner.

What is the truth behind the Uttam Nagar violence?

So far, most accounts circulating publicly have come from only one side. I spoke to Shaheen from the Muslim family involved, who alleged that the dispute began after her aunt was harassed on the day of Holi, following which tensions escalated in the neighbourhood.

According to her, Tarun later arrived with around 20–25 individuals carrying iron rods and sticks and allegedly assaulted several members of her family, leaving many seriously injured. She also claimed that a 14-year-old boy, Rizwan, was beaten, suffered seizures, and was later taken away from the hospital, after which the family has had no information about his whereabouts.

Shaheen further alleged that despite multiple injuries in the family, several of their male relatives, including a minor, were arrested and sent to jail, while their homes and vehicles were looted and demolished, and women from the family were also taken into custody.

These are serious allegations from the Muslim side that had not been heard publicly until now. The truth should emerge through a fair and impartial investigation.
