What the study is ??

The paper is “Life without sex: Large-scale study links sexlessness to physical, cognitive, and personality traits, socioecological factors, and DNA” by Abdel Abdellaoui et al., published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in 2025.

They looked at people who report never having had sex (i.e. lifetime sexlessness) in large samples:

~ 400,000 people in the UK (age 39–73)
~ 13,500 people in Australia (age 18–89)

They examined a broad range of correlates: physical traits, cognitive and personality measures, socio-ecological (social, economic, environmental) variables, and genetic data.

What they found ??

Here are some of the relevant associations they observed; note that association ≠ causation.

• Sexless individuals tend to be more highly educated.

• They are less likely to drink alcohol or smoke.

• They report more nervousness, loneliness, and lower subjective well-being.

• There's a sex difference in how physical traits matter: for men, physical differences (e.g. upper body strength) are more strongly associated.

• Also, genetics: common genetic variants explain ≈ 17% of variation in sexlessness in men, and ≈ 14% in women; there is a genetic correlation between sexes of about 0.56.
