Bengal's daughters are Bengal’s greatest pride. I had the privilege of attending a special felicitation ceremony organised by the Cricket Association of Bengal at the iconic Eden Gardens, honouring Richa Ghosh for her outstanding contribution to India’s World Cup triumph.

On behalf of the Government of West Bengal, I conferred upon her the ‘Banga Bhushan’, one of the state’s highest civilian honours. I also announced her appointment as Deputy Superintendent of Police in the West Bengal Police.

The presence of legends like Shri Sourav Ganguly, Smt. Jhulan Goswami, and other distinguished guests made the evening even more memorable. May more daughters like Richa continue to emerge from every home in Bengal, inspiring generations and carrying our nation’s name to even greater heights on the world stage.

"Sishu Saathi" program, a flagship initiative launched on 2013, has provided free of cost treatment for Congenital Heart Disease, Cleft Lip/Palate, Clubfoot and Neural Tube Defect to 63,000+ children with expenditure of Rs. 300 Cr+ to ensure no child is left behind!

The 2024 Lok Sabha election was a rude awakening for the BJP. The party that boasted “Abki Baar 400 Paar” failed to secure a single majority. Now they have begun weaponising constitutional bodies to tilt the electoral scales in their favour. The “Karte Loot, Bolte Jhooth” party failed to win on votes, so now they are trying to win by notes, by misusing money and muscle.

They have crossed the ‘Lakshman Rekha’ by conducting SIR in Bengal. If electoral accuracy were the concern, why is SIR being carried out only in Opposition-ruled states among the four heading to polls? Why was BJP-ruled Assam exempted? If the aim was to eliminate “Bangladeshis” and “Rohingyas” from the rolls, why only target Bengal? Bengal shares a border with Bangladesh, just like Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. But only Bengal is being singled out. Similarly, states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, which share borders with Myanmar, are exempted from SIR. Why?

Because SIR is nothing but NRC through the backdoor. Who gave the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and a certain Mir Jafar the authority to question our legitimacy as citizens on the very soil our forefathers bled for? Who authorised them to demand our parents’ birth certificates and make us prove our existence?

Do not mistake our civility for weakness. In this fight for people’s identity, constitutional rights, and survival, the Bangla-Birodhis will confront a defeat like never before. Should any harm come to our people, should a single genuine voter be unfairly struck off the rolls, the people of Bengal will march to Delhi with the cry “BJP Hatao, Odhikaar Bachao.” We will bring the zamindars to their knees and, through democratic means, consign this assault on our rights to dust.

Here goes my letter to the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, communicating my surprise and shock at the unilateral appointment by the Government of India of an interlocutor for the issues relating to Gorkhas in Darjeeling Hills, Tarai and Dooars regions of West Bengal.

In times of adversity, it is faith that lights our path and gives us courage. Today, I had the privilege of visiting the sacred Mahakal Temple in Darjeeling, where I prayed for the health, peace, and prosperity of the people of Bengal and our nation at large.

May the divine grace of the Almighty provide strength to those affected by the recent floods and landslides in North Bengal, helping them overcome their losses and rebuild their lives. May hope return to every home, may happiness touch every heart, and may stability once again embrace their lives. Rescue and rehabilitation efforts are still continuing in full swing; our Maa-Mati-Manush Sarkaar is committed to ensuring that every affected person receives the help and support they need.

As we have already established Jagannath Dham in Digha and are developing the Durga Angan in New Town, it is our vision to soon build a magnificent Mahakal Temple in Siliguri as well. This will not only stand as a beacon of faith and devotion but also as a symbol of Bengal’s spiritual unity and inclusive cultural identity.

Over the past few days, I have been personally monitoring and reviewing the relief and rehabilitation efforts underway across the flood and landslide-affected areas of North Bengal following the extreme rainfall earlier this month. Day before yesterday, I had visited Hasimara in Alipurduar, and yesterday, I travelled to Nagrakata, Chalsa, Mal, and Kurseong, meeting affected families, interacting with officials, and overseeing the ongoing restoration work on the ground. Today, I shall visit the other side of Mirik to personally assess the situation in the landslide-affected areas and ensure that every affected person receives the support they need. Tomorrow, I will convene an administrative meeting for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Mirik.

During my visit to Nagrakata, I interacted with the residents at the relief camps in Bamandanga and Tandoo, ensuring that food, shelter, and medical facilities are being provided without interruption. I also reviewed the repair work of the Tanatani Bridge over the river Gathia, which was severely damaged during the flash floods, and later inspected the Kalikhola Bridge, now restored by the Public Works Department.

At the Bamandanga relief camp, I had the opportunity to hand over appointment letters for Home Guard employment to the family members of flood victims as part of our comprehensive rehabilitation initiative. Ten beneficiaries, including eight from Jalpaiguri and two from Cooch Behar, received their letters today. I have also announced that every family whose house has been damaged in the calamity will receive financial assistance of ₹1.2 lakh for reconstruction under our State scheme.

Our Maa-Mati-Manush Sarkaar has mobilised all resources to ensure comprehensive, round-the-clock relief operations. Special camps have been set up to help citizens recover essential documents lost in the floods, while students who lost their books are being provided new study materials. Food kits, disaster management supplies, and other essentials are being distributed extensively across all affected areas.

Natural calamities are beyond our control, but our compassion, preparedness, and collective resolve define our response. The courage, grit, and perseverance of the people of North Bengal continue to inspire me. Our State Government will remain by your side, every hour, every day, until normalcy is fully restored.

When the people of Bengal are in distress, I feel their suffering as my own. The recent heavy rainfall and landslides have caused severe flooding across North Bengal, leading to the tragic loss of lives, livelihoods, and property. Dhupguri, Nagrakata, large parts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, as well as Matigara, Jorebunglow Sukhiapokhri, Mirik, and other areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, are among the worst affected.

Today, I visited Hasimara and Nagrakata, meeting families and locals, assessing their needs, and assuring them of the full support and cooperation of the State Government. Our Chief Secretary and Director General of Police are on the front lines, personally monitoring the situation, while senior leaders, volunteers, and the State Disaster Management Force continue to carry out rescue and relief operations on a war footing.

We have arranged buses to evacuate stranded tourists, opened community kitchens and relief camps to provide food and shelter, and announced compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs and a Home Guard position for the families of those who have lost their lives. Tea garden workers who have suffered losses will also receive compensation from the State Government in the coming days.

I have repeatedly urged the Centre to constitute an Indo-Bhutan River Commission, but there has been no response. In addition, the lack of proper dredging and desiltation, and unilateral water releases from DVC-controlled dams have compounded the situation, resulting in avoidable tragedies.

But in times of crisis, politics must never take precedence over people’s lives. The State Government remains committed to standing shoulder to shoulder with those affected. I urge everyone to maintain faith, remain calm, and not fall prey to provocations. Compassion, empathy, and humanity must guide us all.
