@danfaggella Often to the uninitiated audience, one's distance from the Overton window is much more significant than their alignment in that part of the Overton window. When you are a notable face in an esoteric topic, you are assumed adhere with the most notable alignment of that topic
@26thAndGuad The sailing plan I just filed with the Aegean Sea lists me, my men, Eurylochus here, but only one of you
First one to talk gets to stay on my ship
@nosilverv There is more “meaning” to expression via some choice rather than accident (plastic surgery vs genetics, taking peptides vs metabolism). There is a virtue to authoring yourself in ways previously unavailable, even if it is a “shortcut”
@benjamin_horne I’m pretty sure it will be clear whether slowdown will be due to deliberate regulation/caution or AI hitting a scaling wall. Obviously if the labs/government decide to slow things down, things will slow down, but that doesnt make the hypothetical foom case a foolish prediction
@sebkrier The main concern is a sense of anxiety over relative status, right now you can ascend to a high status job via your intelligence/hard work. Once intelligence/agency is commodified, there is no obvious way to rise above your station, or even maintain it.
@tszzl Models being delayed a bit isn’t a big deal, but it seems this is all on course to frontier capabilities being locked behind artificial barriers indefinitely, concentrating the already prodigious wealth and power of those connected to or with leverage over the labs
@crispheaney It is not a luxury belief, in fact it carries a social penalty in many circles where the high-status belief is to consider AI useless and a scam, not an existential risk
@chckdchckd If scans are far cheaper and easier, the standard operating procedure wouldn’t be “scan and if there is possible issue do a bunch of invasive tests”, but instead “do a quick and easy scan every months to track if the aberration requires further testing”
@tszzl When super intelligence can peer into every atom of our being, what is left for human will that is not catalogued? What benign mystery is left, what frontiers to plunder?
Yeah I know it all converges to the infinite intelligence singleton but I’d love to experience a benignly dysfunctional Futurama for 5-10 years before we all become emotionless substrate. Can we just have some time to play around with the cool local maxima tech?
@zhengyaojiang How would, for example, prominent members of an AI lab, help assuage people of their concerns over a potential “permanent underclass” future?
