Yele Sowore, a 53-year-old legal U.S. resident, was indeed jailed in Nigeria in 2019 after returning to his homeland. He is a Nigerian-born journalist, human rights activist, and pro-democracy campaigner who founded the news site Sahara Reporters.

Sowore was arrested in August 2019 after he called for nationwide protests in Nigeria under the banner of the #RevolutionNow movement. The protests aimed to address issues such as corruption, economic stagnation, and human rights abuses in the country.

His arrest and detention sparked outrage both in Nigeria and internationally, with many calling for his release and criticizing the Nigerian government for its apparent disregard for the rule of law and human rights.

After several court orders for his release on bail and a prolonged legal battle, Sowore was finally released in December 2019. However, he was rearrested just a few hours later by the Nigerian state security service, which further intensified the controversy surrounding his case.

In 2020, Sowore was released again, and in 2024, he was finally allowed to leave Nigeria and reunite with his family in the United States. His case has been widely discussed as an example of the challenges faced by activists and journalists in Nigeria and the broader struggle for democracy and human rights in the country.
