I respect where this argument comes from, and would add that none of the violent, traumatizing films about men murdering/assaulting both women and each other have ever been cancelled for not having a trigger warning. It's a trap. #LuckiestGirlAlive
Hot take: the #triggerwarning debate is much like the "Hamilton was a bad person" debate; just another plausible way to distract and detract from the importance of media by and about people who are disadvantaged by hegemonic systems.
@oishani Assign characters to students/groups and make them responsible for recapping or offering takes on their appearances (I have mine pick names out of a bucket for Dickens novels). Gives them something to focus on in what can otherwise be a pretty overwhelming cast of characters!
@Brooklyne The comments attest that βgetting a PhDβ describes a huge range of experience. I donβt know how helpful it is to flatten that range. Also striking workers arenβt claiming itβs βthe worst thing that ever happened.β People are responding negatively bc this feels like a straw man.
@HadeerElhabashy@AcademicChatter I would also think that hiring someone who is qualified in every way, and is as qualified as all of the other applicants, couldn't really be described as "bias." If so, hiring anyone other than the man is always going to be called "bias."
@HadeerElhabashy@AcademicChatter I totally understand. But you asked: should we take gender diversity into account, all else being equal, and my answer is yes π€·ββοΈ We're working with a centuries-old imbalance, so avoiding "imbalance in the other direction" oversimplifies the problem
@redux_lint @tjschweiger I saw it, too! It looked incredibly expensive and also thoughtful, and I was like greatβ¦bc money and thoughts happen to be the exact two things Iβm *fresh* out of rnβ¦
