This headline is from @cnni and it's inaccurate and harmful.

It uses the grammar of democratic elections: "win", "secured", "term", plebiscite".

These terms do not apply to Russia because Russia is not a democratic state.

What happened over the last few days in Russia were not free and fair elections, but rather a Dictatorship Memorial weekend.

So why do international media outlets use the same language as if they talked about elections in the UK?

It's because they lack critical thinking skills, and they lack vocabulary to describe what is actually happening in Russia.

They simply apply what they know and what is familiar to them and apply to Russia simply because Russia itself says it held elections.

This is harmful because it legitimises autocracies.

@rimpeling @JoostNiemoller Daar draaide dit niet om uiteraard. Heel dit spektakel draaide om het Russische volk het idee in hun hoofd te planten dat er geen alternatief voor Putin is. Elke tegenstander die iets van leiderschap uitstraalde werd geweerd mbv technicaliteiten of geliquideerd.

@dirktheuns @pakkieBeyltjens @torfsrik Dat is niet hetzelfde als 'het zal nooit meer echt nat zijn' maar alez ik begrijp wel waar het gevoel van komt. Feit dat we nu een natte periode hebben weerlegt deze stelling niet. Is een beetje hetzelfde als dat het nooit meer zal sneeuwen.

@StreanelA Terecht dat je vindt dat landbouw een hoge prioriteit moet krijgen. Een agenda van zo'n belangrijk overleg pas je echter niet aan op het laatste moment. Of Oekraïne al dan niet een steunpakket mag krijgen heeft m.i. bitter weinig te maken met verwaarlozing van onze landbouw.
