Three weeks ago, I picked up my kit and walked into a community that had no idea I was coming. Neither did I fully know what was waiting for me.
Our institution organised a community outreach at GS SHANGO in Gasabo district, Nduba sector and I was part of the team. Not just as a participant, but as someone who genuinely wanted to understand what oral health looks like beyond the clinic walls, beyond the textbooks, beyond what we are taught in lecture rooms.
What I found changed something in me.
On day 1, we began with education. Oral health sessions with children who had never been taught how to properly hold a toothbrush. We used demonstrations, songs, and stories. We made it fun. We made it theirs.
Watching a child's face light up when they realize they can protect their own teeth, that a few minutes of brushing twice a day is actually a superpower, is something I will carry with me long after this program ends.
After three days, we shifted into screening mode. Children, one by one, opening their mouths and trusting us completely. What we found was sobering. Cavities that had gone unnoticed for months. Gum conditions that had never been named. Pain that children had simply learned to live with, because no one had ever told them it could be different.
I remember a child who smiled at me before I even said a word. That smile; crooked, a little nervous, completely trusting, stayed with me the entire day.
By the last day, something had shifted in the community too. Parents were asking questions. Children were reminding each other to brush. A few kids even came back to tell us they had taught their siblings what they learned.
That is the moment you realize: this is bigger than a screening. This is bigger than a single outreach day. This is about planting seeds of health literacy that will grow long after we are gone.
Three weeks. Dozens of children screened. Countless smiles examined. Lessons shared. But more than anything, lessons were received.
I came to serve the community. The community ended up teaching me just as much.
To my institution, my supervisors, and every colleague who showed up day after day, thank you. To the children who opened their mouths and their hearts, you are why this work matters.
The outreach may be wrapping up. But the commitment? That is just beginning.
