- My lab director, Larry Jackel, called it LeNet in 1988.
- The phrase Convolutional Neural Net was coined by John Platt and Steve Nowlan in this NIPS 1994 paper: https://t.co/y7f7ZWbCNI
- I adopted the name Convolutional Network (without the "neural") since the mid 1990s. "Neural" was a bad word then!
- Rama Chellappa started using the acronym CNN in the late 1990s, following a comparative study he did in which he showed them to be performing very well.
- I preferred to use the shorthand "ConvNet" to avoid hash code collisions with a famous TV news station.
- But the computer vision community adopted the acronym CNN.
