Two years of empagliflozin slowed kidney disease progression and reduced cardiovascular risk. In the follow-up study to the EMPA-KIDNEY trial, empagliflozin had additional cardiorenal benefits after discontinuation. Full study results and Research Summary: https://t.co/yVvVg7V37b
As the potency of #ObesityMedicines for #WeightLoss grows, @FDA and HCPs need to refocus on the right target for #ObesityCare. It's all about health gain, not just weight loss.

Nutritional Strategies for Reducing Postprandial Glycemia
1️⃣ Premeal nutrient intake modulates postprandial glycemia by delaying gastric emptying and influencing incretin hormone secretion, which is crucial for individuals with type 2 diabetes.
2️⃣ Protein is the most potent stimulator of glucose-dependent insulin secretion, enhances GLP-1 release, and reduces insulin clearance, improving metabolic efficiency
3️⃣ Dietary fat slows gastric emptying through potent intestinal feedback mechanisms, modulates insulin response, and enhances GLP-1 secretion when combined with protein.
3️⃣ Fruits may improve glucose tolerance via the Staub-Traugott effect, while fiber delays carbohydrate absorption, reducing postprandial insulin demand.
5️⃣ Almonds, rich in MUFAs and fiber, improve insulin sensitivity, delay glucose absorption, and may stimulate early-phase insulin release via pancreatic modulation.
Strategic premeal nutrient selection is particularly important for individuals with type 2 diabetes to optimize glycemic control and metabolic outcomes.

STEP UP Trial Top-line Results for Semaglutide 7.2 mg
Novo Nordisk has shared results from the STEP UP trial evaluating semaglutide 7.2 mg for obesity treatment:
🔹Average weight loss of 20.7% with treatment adherence over 72 weeks.
🔹18.7% weight loss on average, regardless of adherence.
🔹33% of participants achieved over 25% weight loss with 7.2 mg.
These results demonstrate greater efficacy compared to semaglutide 2.4 mg (17.5% with adherence) and placebo (2.4%), with a similar safety and tolerability profile.
Additional data, including results from the STEP UP T2D trial, are expected later this year.

This is a great article and we need to highlight this more to protect patients from potentially harmful treatment of a disease that doesn’t have comprehensive universal coverage.
Over 1 billion people live with #obesity. There is an urgent need for a universal definition & diagnosis.

GLP-1 based therapies led to ~30% total body lean mass loss, in a newly published meta-analysis.
This proportion is on the higher end of what might be expected with lifestyle-based weight loss.
The 30% figure aligns more closely with what is seen with bariatric surgery.
What has yet to be more fully studied is what may impact this percentage:
- Rate of weight loss
- Degree of energy or nutrient deficiency
- Extent of physical activity
- Protein intake

Important points made in the Obesity Medicine Association’s latest position statement on compounded GLP1s 💉:
“Compounded drugs pose a higher risk to patients than FDA-approved drugs because compounded drugs do not undergo FDA premarket review for safety, effectiveness, or quality.
“The FDA has NOT banned compounded drugs. Depending on the circumstances, compounded drugs can be made and distributed with fewer restrictions when the drug appears on FDA’s drug shortages list
“When a drug is in shortage, compounders may be able to prepare a compounded version of that drug if they meet certain requirements. Ozempic and Wegovy are both listed on FDA’s Drug Shortages list.
“When these AOM are no longer on the FDA drug shortage list, then the justification no longer exists, and (presumably), compounding pharmacies will discontinue production.
