It was December 16, 2024, when ECOWAS formally approved the withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from the regional body in accordance with Article 91 of the revised ECOWAS treaty. A move that crippled joint counter-terrorism frameworks and created porous borders that armed groups exploit across West Africa.
The three military led nations established the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to form their own mutual defense pact that has failed to stem the tide of militant insurgencies. A huge chunk of Mali and B-Faso remain actively contested or under jihadist control. Niger is on the same trajectory.
No matter how they try to spin it, their isolationist militarism has proven ineffective at containing a transnational threat, leaving the entire region to bear the cost.
I wonder who will be the first to break the news headline,
"One million SADAT mercenaries are heading to Niger," following President Tchiani's visit to TĂŒrkiye.
