@33elkMTG The lower power the format and the more proactive the deck, the more this applies. If you're playing 16 lands and 12 2-drops in draft, get em in there. You know what you're about. If you're playing a Jeskai Lurrus mirror in Vintage, you better enjoy being calm and casting bait.
@RossHunneds I prioritize my basics based on my respect for the format. Vintage/Legacy get preferred basics. Other 60 card formats get land box. If I get conned into Limited, I keep a pile of dogshit lands I hate. And my one Commander deck that I'm embarrassed to own gets ugly af proxy basics
@caro_irl@mitchellsocks I'm currently facing the potential necessity of playing limited to round out my skills as a 60-card player and dreading it. I'm honestly contemplating taking a step back from trying to improve altogether if that's the route I have to go, but we'll see what happens.
@TragikDesign@LilAmericanPunk I'm not sure what "it thinking" is or what better metric I would use to call a card "good" outside of constructed success in powerful fotmats at high levels of competition, so I guess I'll have to leave the rest of this conversation to you, Your Royal Trolly Fuckheadedness.
@AaronThePedant@Marakath I always have a build in mind, but all the build tells me is what to do when there's nothing better to be doing. It's all well and good to white room theorycraft, but that just covers a few combat situations. Then it's up to me to figure out how to be effective in all the rest.
@IamActuallyLvL1 Justin, are you implying that large groups of people going on vibes alone and yelling make questionable decisions? And to think I used to think your takes were reasonable...
@Zachujo @StarCityGames CEDH Selvala with none of Ancient Tomb, Survival of the Fittest, Gaea's Cradle, Chrome Mox, or Mox Diamond and "few" tutors? I'm skeptical.
@WrestlingBios Flair vs. Sting from Clash I. I saw it about a year after first seeing wrestling, and JR's commentary, the sports feel, Sting being the up and comer getting made via draw, and as silly as it sounds, the statement that they had standby matches if it ended early all stuck with me.
@TierZoo And their reflect damage is incredible. Even when the human players are enhanced by the Automobile item, running into a moose is liable to break their item and injure or kill them. Moose players with a couple favorable rolls have been known to go through windshields and walk away
@ethantcmtg @hovermyr For sure. The day that Lurrus, Paradoxical Outcome, and Vengevine are more expensive than Black Lotus, we can all rub our tummies contentedly and pat WotC on the head and say, "Good Wizards."
@ethantcmtg @hovermyr I'm talking about the pie-in-the-sky ideal world here, but we can get a little more grounded. If they need a costly buyback plan or to get sued or both, I'm ok with it, even if I'd rather it go smoothly. If the end result is Vintage every Comp REL and Limited FNM only, perfect.
@GregShahade There should be a series of qualifying tournaments for one big tournament. Then the top 6 finishers in that tournament can join two other top players chosen by other criteria in some bracket match play. Woever wins that match play bracket should be the challenger. Novel, I know.
@TarjeiJS Yes. If they play for 6 months and FIDE shuts it down for the health of the players, weβll truly know they were evenly matched and can look forward to the restart the next year.
@AaronThePedant @ScrySociety The encounter starting is where you get the most additional information after your first draft. 25-40% of my encounter design happens after initiative is rolled.
@AaronThePedant@bread314 I don't just arbitrarily pick numbers out of thin air, but I start imposing blanket penalties or bonuses to NPC rolls or reducing HP pools as elements of encounter design, because encounter design doesn't stop when initiative is rolled.
