I left the Mavs in May 2021 and had no involvement with the team after that.

Jalen signed with the Knicks in July 2022.

During the 2020 NBA Draft, I thought Tyrese Haliburton was the best player in the class and I was trying to trade for him. Brunson was one of the Mavs’ assets that had real value around the league, and I was very much in favor of moving him if it meant we could get Haliburton.

I never thought Jalen would become the player he is now. Very few people did. But I’m happy for him. In my time with the Mavs, he was always a great professional and extremely committed to his craft.

My position on Jalen was not especially sophisticated you either trade him before he becomes an unrestricted free agent, or you extend him.
