A beginner in affiliate marketing will usually open an affiliate platform and start asking, “What can I promote?”

Someone with more experience usually starts somewhere completely different, “What are people already trying to solve?”

When you start with products, you’re looking at what is available and then trying to find a reason people might want it.

You see a course about Instagram growth, a software tool for email marketing, a fitness programme, and suddenly you’re thinking about what kind of content you could create around each one.

When you start with the problem, you can work backwards. Maybe you’re researching people who want to get their first freelance client, and you keep seeing the same complaints about not knowing what to put in their portfolio.

You might find people asking for portfolio examples, paying for templates, buying courses and hiring people to help them put one together.

Now you have something much more useful to investigate.

You can look at the solutions they’re already buying, what those solutions are missing, what people complain about after buying them and which products actually solve the problem well.

That also changes your content.

Instead of constantly creating posts about a product you want to promote, you can talk about the situation that makes someone search for that product in the first place, which gives you far more ways to reach the same buyer before you ever mention the affiliate link.
