SBRT is redefining spine oncology.
High-dose, precise radiation →
✔️ Strong local control
✔️ Pain relief
✔️ Minimally invasive option
But the key shift is paradigm:
➡️ From palliative → durable control
➡️ From siloed care → multidisciplinary strategy
Surgery + SBRT = powerful combo.

The neurosurgery BioForce Spine team of @js_hudson, @DrJosephMaroon, @SamuelAdida, Haitao Liu and @NitinAgarwalMD has reached the finals of the @PittTweet Wells Student HealthTech Challenge for their project "An Osteoinductive Nanoscale Peptide Coating for Spinal Implants."
In honor of #NeurosurgeryAwarenessMonth, we're thrilled to highlight how one seed of support can lead to breakthrough innovation in patient care, thanks to the support of @NREFORG
Meet Aditya Mittal, a 2022 NREF Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship recipient from the University of Pittsburgh (@PittTweet@PittNeurosurg), who embarked on a project to develop a blood test for cerebral aneurysm detection.
Here’s how far that one fellowship has taken him:
- Over $500,000 in follow-on funding, including a $275,000 National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research Phase I grant with Mittal as principal investigator, plus support from the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (@BAFOUND)
- Two patents filed on the blood test—and the formation of Astria Biosciences, Inc., together with @UPMC neurosurgery faculty
Aditya credits the NREF: “Without NREF, none of these achievements would have been possible!”

Proud to have given the commencement address for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine graduating class of 2025!! Re-connected w/ old neurosurgery friends Dr Robert Friedlander (fellow MGH neurosurgery grad), Dr David Okonkwo, and Dr Dade Lunsford!! Special people in Pittsburgh. It was GREAT to be back. #twopercentway #TheNextLeadersInMedicine
A recent study published in @NeurosurgeryCNS that spine radiosurgery is a safe and effective treatment for benign intradural tumors. In carefully selected patients, even with an NF1 mutation, SRS is associated with a high likelihood of local tumor control
