This is my favourite New Year’s Eve poem, though it really is just a bit from a much larger, magnificent poem: In Memoriam by Tennyson. It has a religious feel, but you can enjoy the sentiment without it. Happy New Year: may the best of your past be the worst of your future.
Excellent stuff.
Frequent end of unit assessments give the illusion of progress, but in reality they could - and should - be replaced with more frequent and lower stakes retrieval practice.
I’m all for child protection and we should be making the internet much safety for young people - but the law is infringing on the right to free speech in many ways. Social media sites should not need to have personal ID information.
The Greeks had two ways of thinking about time: Chronos and Kairos.
"The time used by storytellers is more cyclical, close to the time of nature. The Greeks talked about Chronos. Chronology time. The one we can measure.
Then they talked about Kairos, which is deep time. That is the time of storytelling.
Kronos is more measurable. It's easy to calculate. You can depend on clocks, calendars, and schedules. But Kairos is deep time, and you need to pay attention to Kairos. If you're interested in the stories of nature, maybe the journey of a rock, you can't just measure it with that tiny element of time. You have to look at millennia; you have to look at this long duration of time.
I've always believed that storytellers should be interested in a much more cyclical notion of time."
I loved this post from Carl when I read it, and went into our footage to find examples. Check out the video here, and note the way the teachers try to keep their heads up and looking around the room. There's two aspects to that in these videos:
1. A general dispositions of looking around constantly
2. An increased emphasis on it immediately after responding to disruption (of any kind)
A lot of the research focuses on teachers who have been doing this for years. It observes them, sees what they are doing, and describes it. But often the vibe is that they do it naturally, that their experience has just sort of led them to acting in a certain way.
I think for many that might be right, but we mustn't lose sight of the fact that strategies like this can be taught and assimilated rapidly. For example, in this video Abi was in her ECT year, but has the "gaze" of a teacher with 10 years more experience than her.
Great teaching isn't a mystery or a secret. It can be noticed, disassembled, communicated and implemented.
neither of the twin towers was the nation’s tallest building in 1975. the sears tower was the tallest building in the nation from 1973-2013, and the tallest in the entire world for a quarter century. put some respect on her name!!!
