@justin_perdue Just preached this text based on this premise. Verses 1-2 are clear that the Psalm 1 man has moral perfection and unending devotion. Only Jesus lives up to the ideal of the blessed and righteous man.

The Bible gets treated the same way.

Some read scripture like a textbook and focus on extracting truths. Others read scripture like mere literature and focus on experiencing its beauty. One reads with their head and the other reads with their heart. Both don't quite get it right.

Scripture, the Great Books, the Western Canon - all of it is intended to form readers into men (and women) of faith, virtue, and action. Until we realize that, we're just turning pages.

The invention of the “children’s pastor,” “women’s pastor,” or “young adult’s pastor” has produced an inflated, hyper-specialized, and extra-biblical structure for the church.

According to Scripture, there are elders and deacons. The men who hold those two offices oversee or serve all groups of the church equally.

For example, at @kingswayarizona, I am one of the elders, and I oversee not just the men but also the women, children, singles, and families.

Hyperspecialization is one of those moments when we ought to say, “Just because it sounds smart doesn’t mean it’s right.” Ultimately, it creates unnecessary complexity and new offices beyond Scripture.

It shifts responsibility away from fathers, husbands, and mature believers, leaving little room for member-to-member discipleship since every need is assigned to a specialized pastor.

At its core, hyper-specialization reflects a business-like approach to ministry rather than God’s simple design: elders shepherd, deacons serve, and the whole church disciples one another.
