Most self-proclaimed devs don’t realise that real engineering work in mainstream applications goes into the infrastructure that runs them.
Not just “building features.”
A/B testing
Canary releases
Feature flags
Observability
Logging
Monitoring
Alerting
CI/CD pipelines
Rollback systems
Load balancing
Caching
Queues
Rate limiting
Security hardening
Database migrations
Backups
Incident response
Performance tuning
Cost optimization
Deployment strategy
The app is what users see.
The engineering is everything that keeps it alive when millions of people touch it.
I'm scared for Zed Editor.
It is a great editor, no doubt. Great performance, low memory footprint, and whatnot.
However, unlike VScode, this one is owned by a startup, and their original monetisation route was the live collaboration feature. Now, we have LLMs. They sell tokens at the same price they buy them. You do not need an MBA to see how this is not sustainable.
Tokens are getting expensive, or rather, the subsidies are going away. Providers like GH Copilot are moving to token-based billing because, unlike 2022, where all LLMs did was tab completion, now they call tools "remember things" and iterate. They call this mode agentic, and it is token-hungry.
So what happens to Zed? At some point, they'll need revenue. How will they compete? They are selling performance to people who don't care about it at all.

AI agents are semi- or fully autonomous systems that can perceive, reason, and act independently, integrating with software platforms to complete multistep tasks with minimal human oversight. But there are a host of risks and challenges that companies need to be aware of as agentic AI matures.

@housecor I will create a file named useModal.ts and include the useEscapeKey and useClickOutsideModal hooks in this file, so related hooks are organized in one place instead of scattered across different files.
