April 1975: As Saigon fell, Operation Babylift evacuated Vietnamese orphans to America. On the first C-5A flight, 243 babies were aboard—many strapped into cardboard boxes. 12 minutes after takeoff, the rear door blew off. The crash killed 138 people, including 78 babies.
