Do you know what “parachute science” is? When we scientists collect data and run without considering the impact on, or benefits to, local communities. @theAGU is working to raise awareness and reduce parachute science among our members and authors.
@NinaIRamos@isdsc8 @quattrinia @SmithsonianDPO @mud_Iark Congrats on your award, well-deserved! Your work is really advancing science & outreach, already curious what you have to tell next time!
First up, the impact of scallop dredging. Dredges typically feature a spring-loaded bar covered in metal ‘teeth’ designed to dig up the seabed to disturb & catch scallops, towing a heavy steel-ring collecting ‘bag’ behind. It’s highly destructive, classed as ‘high impact’.
"..the hypercompetitive academic environment offers a 'survival benefit' for people with personality traits such as boldness, dominance, meanness and disinhibition [...] we need to make sure that academic leaders are culturally sensitive tram players..." (Täuber & Mahmoudi 2022)
"Bullying is a means for mediocre scientists to rise to the top. Some star academics reached their position because they are bullies, not in spite of it." - Excellent piece about bullying in academia (and really any other professional environment). https://t.co/JTqGBaAuuf
@quattrinia When you question the answer it provides, it just says „sorry, the opposite is correct“, providing 4 opposed answers in less than a minute… so just to get this right, this is the new era of intelligence and scientific publications? Good to know!
