1) Led by my former student Victoria Bowland, we examined the victim-perpetrator nexus in the context of online radicalisation https://t.co/cmLCvyme4j

2) With Jonathan Kenyon and Jens Binder, we identified distinct types of internet use that predict the likelihood of planning/committing a terrorist attack (in England and Wales) - https://t.co/nZrN5X2iW6

This autumn, we were excited to deliver two Project Unity sessions in partnership with MOPAC, bringing powerful exchanges on counter-extremism to London universities.

We show that common types of counterspeech have likely no impact on subsequent bystander behaviour intentions. (2)
I am proud of my student Yue Jia who just had his first paper on the impact of counterspeech (to hate speech) accepted. Unfortunately, Yue passed away before he could hear the good news. I thank the editor of @CyberPsy_jn for her support in the last weeks. (1)
I am excited to join @LDN_VRU steering group on online harms! I look forward to working with a wide range of stakeholders to explore how online harms facilitate violence offline and prevent violence in London.
Our work on attitudinal inoculation in the context of violent extremism is now published - "attitudinal inoculation conferred resistance to violent extremist propaganda for a short period and for individuals who are perhaps less at risk of being persuaded" https://t.co/sfDqJrHyYa

Combining administrative registers and individual Twitter behavior among Danes, we show that multiple offline indicators predict online hostility:
Having many more criminal verdicts increase the likelihood of being hostile online.
But - against common stereotypes of online haters - so does having high school grades when you grew up. The reason: Hostility is about politics and those from an affluent background are much more likely to tweet about politics.
All in all, hostility is not just about algorithms and the features of online discussions. Individual offline dispositions matter too.
Thank you for another great collaboration to @stighebbelstrup and @boralexander1!

@EnricoMariconti I find it striking that these disputes are framed such that students are fully passive in their education. Itโs not like a getting a haircut. Students themselves must play an active role, and arguably the role they played during the pandemic was also not the same as before.
Itโs a wrap! We concluded our 5-day @lorentzcenter workshop on Methods for Studying Hate and (Violent) Extremism Online. An amazing group did a lot of heavy intellectual lifting. @Isabellevdv@R_Scrivens and myself are grateful for everyoneโs contributions. Next stop: our book!
Had a great time discussing and presenting on the many research methods for studying extremist communities online. Thanks a lot to @Sandy_Research@Isabellevdv@R_Scrivens for organizing the workshop and excited to be a part of what is to come next. @lorentzcenter
