At the High Line, a 25-foot sandstone sculpture of Buddha by artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen.

Inspired by "Salsal," the 6th-century Bamiyan Buddhas of Afghanistan destroyed by the Taliban in 2001, this sculpture is named "the light that shines through the universe" ✨

'Mesmerized' by 'Placebo!' ;)

[Archaeo - Histories @archeohistories]

By mid-1770s, German physician Franz Mesmer had become convinced of the existence of an invisible force which he called animal magnetism, a fluid-like force which he believed flowed in and around all things, and that with the use of magnets this energy could be manipulated to cure illnesses and other infirmities. Soon after he began practicing his theories on patients, Mesmer dispensed with the magnets, concluding that he could achieve the same results with vocal suggestions and by motions of his hands and eyes. During the treatment sessions, Mesmer would put his patients into a type of trance-like sleep state, during which they would obey his commands and become insensitive to pain. Sensationalized reports of healings (and sensationalized accusations of fraud and impropriety with female patients) made Mesmer famous and put him in great demand. Calling themselves “magnetizers” (and later “mesmerists”), he and others who adopted his practice, became wildly popular, and controversial.

From the beginning many in the scientific community had denounced Mesmer’s claims as nonsense. After being ostracized by the medical community in Vienna, Mesmer relocated to Paris where his services continued to be in great demand. In response to the continuing controversy and skepticism in the medical and scientific communities, Mesmer and his followers pointed to the many people who claimed to have been cured by the process. Seeking to settle the controversy, in 1784 King Louis XVI of France empaneled a commission, which included Benjamin Franklin and Antoine Lavoisier, to investigate and report on the efficacy of “mesmerism.”

Later that year, after an investigation that may have included the first use of a blind trial, the panel published its conclusions, reporting that there was no scientific evidence for the existence of “animal magnetism” and that those of Mesmer’s patients who seemed to respond to the treatments were under the effect of the power of suggestion, imagination and imitation (believed to be the first scientific description of the placebo effect).

Mesmer and his supporters denounced the commission and its findings, but the “mesmerist” craze began to wane. Mesmer himself left France and resumed his practice in Switzerland, before returning to the German state of Baden, where he died in 1815 at age 80. Although mesmerism lingered on for a while (experiencing a brief revival in popularity in mid-19th century America for example) in time it faded away, leaving as its principal legacies the practice of hypnosis and our word “mesmerized.”

"....with Chai & avocado toast!" :)

[Harsh Goenka @hvgoenka]

Gujarati word of the day: “Panchat”
Real translation: Worrying about what everyone else is doing and why.

Our national pastime → starts with “Did you hear…?” and ends with “Don’t tell anyone I told you.”

It’s free therapy, time-pass, entertainment, news channel & social commentary, all rolled in one.
Best enjoyed with chai & avocado toast.
