Most foreign policy issues are difficult and complicated. Greenland isn’t one of them. Let’s have a look at seven points:

1. The U.S. needs Greenland for its own defense - Golden Dome, radars, basing.

▶️ The United States can do virtually anything it'd like in Greenland, security-wise, without taking possession of it. The 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement, which was renewed in 2004, allows the United States to build bases there, station troops, and more.

2. Greenland is about to fall into the hands of Russia and China, and the U.S. can’t let that happen.

▶️ The U.S. once had 10,000 U.S. troops in Greenland; now there are around 200. If there is an imminent threat of Chinese or Russian takeover (there isn’t), perhaps start by increasing that number?

3. Russian and Chinese ships are swarming Greenland and the Danes can’t fend them off.

▶️ If Russian and Chinese ships are really menacing the island, the U.S. Navy could sail around it right now en masse. It isn’t.

4. The U.S. needs to own Greenland because "you don't defend leases." Even if Denmark allows full access, there’s a difference between owning and renting.

▶️ This is the No One Washes a Rental Car theory of international relations. In reality, the United States is committed to defending many allies whose territory it does not own. Trump himself defended Israel just last year. The whole point of alliances is mutual defense of one another's territory. That doesn't require seizing it. 

5. The Danes are bad allies, so they should hand over Greenland.

▶️ Denmark has been a model ally. Not so long ago, Danes fought for America’s defense rather than the other way around. Among 40-plus allies and partners in Afghanistan, Denmark lost the most soldiers as a percentage of its population. Our allies defended the U.S., which, by the way, none of them owns.

6. This is the new Manifest Destiny. We’re an expansionist, frontier people. Greenland should, one way or the other, join the ever-growing Republic.

▶️ The post-1945 order is predicated a prohibition against conquest. Countries don’t acquire the territory of another without their consent. Iraq doesn’t get Kuwait, Russia can’t have Ukraine, Canada won’t be the 51st state, and the U.S. doesn’t compel Greenland to join. We’ve seen a world before in which conquest abounds. It’s the law of the jungle.

7. This isn’t real, just some fun administration trolling of the ever-nervous Europeans.

▶️ It is at a minimum a major distraction from real issues the transatlantic allies should focus on: Russia, Ukraine, Iran, China. Prodding allies to distrust our word and intentions does not amount to good policy.

Most foreign policy issues are difficult and complicated. Greenland isn’t one of them. The sooner this manufactured crisis fades, the better.

If you ever read Tom Holland’s “Dominion,” in which he makes the case that the pre-Christian human mind is so alien to any mind infected by the ideas of Christ as to be wholly unintelligible, which he does by surveying the sheer depth and breadth of ideas which we take for granted and assume are just “human” which are in fact uniquely Christian, then you might come away thinking, “Well that’s a great catalogue of all the ways we now irrevocably think like Christians, but where can I find a book that illustrates how /they/ thought? The ancient pagans? I want to see the alien.”

The answer is simply to do what Holland did. Read those ancient works. Read the Greek epics. Read the Odyssey.

But don’t apply your own standards to it. For instance, when the hero rapes a woman, or tortures or mutilates someone helpless and begging for mercy, or kills a small child, don’t try to figure out why it was actually justified according to your way of thinking, and don’t even think about why it needs to be condemned according to your way of thinking. Rather, just sit there and wrap your mind around the fact that no one thought it needed to be justified or condemned when it was written. It was self-evidently, to them, a heroic act, part of what it means to be a hero.

Once you manage this, most of the modern controversies even over events like Oct 7 and the Holocaust will melt away. You will realize there isn’t any trouble in believing a man raped a girl with a nailgun until she died and then called his grandma to brag about it, nor that Germany and Russia created entire industrial systems of labor camps which had as their objective to ensure that no laborer survived the labor (and entire industrial systems to dispose of the bodies as the laborers died), or that Saladin’s biographer boasts—boasts, because it is a point of pride and honor for Saladin—about “miserly women forced to yield themselves, and women who had been kept hidden [nuns] stripped of their modesty … and free women occupied [meaning “penetrated”], and precious ones used for hard work, and pretty things put to the test, and virgins dishonored and proud women deflowered … and happy ones made to weep!”

It will not be hard to imagine these things done, it will be easy to believe the stories of the holocaust and all the rest, because you will come to understand, by reading pre-Christian heroic stories, that all of this is just normal human behavior. It’s what you would do, would proudly participate in, but you happen to have been born in a Christian land in a Christian time, even if you yourself are not Christian. And where lands become un-Christian, “nature heals.” Human beings return to what they naturally are: the kind of thing that considers this behavior not horrific but heroic, and to be lauded.

Faith, at its best, does the same. It doesn’t promise that everything was “meant to be” in order to make suffering palatable. It invites you to look at what has been entrusted to you in light of what you’ve endured.

George’s story reminds us that meaning is rarely found in the grand escape, but in the faithful presence. The dreams we surrender don’t always vanish—they often become the raw material for something more enduring than we imagined.

That said, if china actually achieved EUV lasers, it’s impressive, but let’s be honest, this kind of leap doesn’t happen without massive espionage layered on top of R&D.

Ultraviolet lithography machines, especially extreme ultraviolet (EUV) systems, are among the MOST difficult machines humans have ever built.

EUV machines aren’t expensive because they’re rare. They’re rare because they’re brutally hard to build.

You’re dealing with 13.5nm light where normal optics stop working. No lenses, only mirrors polished to atomic precision. Surface errors of a few atoms break everything.

There is no EUV laser. You create the light by firing high-power lasers at microscopic tin droplets to generate plasma hotter than the surface of the sun, tens of thousands of times per second, then capture a tiny fraction of the photons.

The entire system runs in ultra-high vacuum because air absorbs EUV instantly. Meanwhile, you’re moving wafers at high speed with sub-nanometer accuracy inside a machine the size of a bus.

And it’s not enough for this to work once in a lab. It has to run 24/7 for years, with insane yields, inside multi-billion-dollar fabs.

This isn’t a only a budget problem. It’s physics limits, industrial reliability, and 30+ years of accumulated failures and know-how across a hyper-specialized supply chain.
