Homeless people deserve a better solution than a park where there are numerous safety concerns
We need more job opportunities (for economic growth), free education, and health care (mental and physical)
Canada can do more for their charter rights than letting them live in parks.
@mcd_faith@OJEN_ROEJ Pt 2. What would you have the government do? The solution is so abstract due to the fact that our nation is so heavily indebted and risks a devaluation of our dollar.
P1. The government has done something. There are 149 government-funded homeless shelters in Ontario alone. Moreover, the country is currently in $2,852 billion of debt and cannot build more shelters until our economy recovers from the pandemic.
Although you have good point, due to the pandemic a lot of these people living in these tents cannot afford housing, which means these people should be allowed to camp until the government does something to provide homes for those in encampment’s. @OJEN_ROEJ#OJENROEJSP22
@mcd_faith@OJEN_ROEJ Pt 1. Yes our system needs reform, however, we do not have the financial resources to be able to tackle such a massive issue for the long term. Should we do so, Canada would risk indebting our nation even more and further growing the unhoused community. #OJENROEJ22
P2. Children living in the neighbourhoods are exposed to dangers(used needles)daily. And families who purchased homes in the neighbourhoods do not deserve to have the value of their home decline, especially during the current housing crisis in Canada(318% rise in price since 2000)
P1. What about the other 99.99918% (37,965,000) of Canadians that deserve their s.7 rights to safety and security as well? It has been observed that more than 10,000 used needles in 3 months were collected from Toronto unhoused community alone. #OJENROEJSP22#LeahyLawYes
The forceful removal of people living in tent encampments is a pure and unethical violation of one of the most basic Charter Rights, under section 7, the right to life, liberty and security and therefore it should be a forbidden practice.
@LeahyLaw_No Why is it not over? Vaccines have been offered free of charge and regardless of housing status in Canada. The provincial government has made countless efforts to target these vulnerable communities in its vaccine campaign. Anyone who remains unvaccinated is doing so by choice
@occupylegal215 @OJEN_ROEJ It is actually illegal to sleep in a park with no permit according to Section 608-13 of the Toronto Municipal Code chapter 608 stating "Unless authorized by permit, no person shall dwell, camp or lodge in a park."
Due to the COVID-19 situation. The unhoused people would be at risk if they would stay in homeless shelters or in encampments. There should be other solutions by the government. The unhoused with serious diseases and illness should be at priority. @OJEN_ROEJ#OJENROEJSP22
P2. Now that our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 have proven effective, the risks assumed by living in an outdoor, unprotected, and unsupervised public place pose a far greater threat to an individual. At this moment, a shelter protects their s.7 rights more than a park.
