Sadly, due to the heat, boxcar day has been canceled. :( We will try to reschedule in August. Itโs fun to be an orphan but not if itโs 95 degrees and humid!
@erinbraid I just realized I never explained it. ๐ Boxcar day is a family tradition. On boxcar day my children pretend they are orphans (like the boxcar children books) and take care of themselves except for when they need to exchange chores for supplies from the friendly shopkeeper (me)
I am running three days of a "daycamp" type experience for my kids -- today is Music Day, Wednesday will be Shakespeare Day, and Friday will be Boxcar Day.
You CAN just do things... but they might not go the way you think they will and it might be not very impressive. But it's better than just a day whining about being bored, at least!
Anyway, the game and the group practice session only took up an hour and then I set them free to just play. After lunch we'll have a mini concert for each other and then clean up. I'm calling it good enough.
@prettywiseass I tried reccing Never Let Me Go to her, but she's very much not a fan of sad stories. (or scary, so horror is probably not a go.) I'll check out that Seven Realms series!
It is the time of year when I request recommendations for my daughter's summer reading! She's going into 10th grade, and the rules are that it must be a "modern" book (and who knows what that means -- but arbitrarily let's say written after the 1960s) and should be challenging..
@teachermother1@IvanaDGreco@LeahLibresco (I do not write professionally, did not study Language Arts, do not homeschool my children. But By George I finally learned how to correctly utilize a semicolon.)
@teachermother1@IvanaDGreco@LeahLibresco It's probably a job done by AI now, of course. But it seems like somebody could build a curriculum in a similar way. Audio readings of various passages, the student transcribes and then compares with the written version and makes corrections?
@teachermother1 Hmm, that looks interesting. (Conveniently recommendations for my children are now also recommendations for ME -- there are some benefits to kids growing up!)
She's a voracious reader of mostly fantasy but is open to other genres. For last summer she read Piranesi and loved it. She loves good writing and poetry and keeps a poetry notebook with her at all times in case inspiration strikes.
