The galaxies NGC 1316 (large) and NGC 1317 (smaller) are located in the constellation Fornax, at a distance of about 60 million light-years. NGC 1316 is a lenticular radio galaxy with an extensive halo; its complex structure is likely the result of multiple past mergers with neighboring galaxies. NGC 1317 is a barred spiral galaxy. It, too, will likely be consumed by its voracious neighbor in the future. The astrophotographer accumulated over 30 hours of exposure time for this image.
