Marketing 101 will tell you that viable products can be built for both. Those examples are also terrible. Somebody's needs could be somebody else's wants. Today's wants could be tomorrow needs.

Sell something people need.

Not what they want.

People WANT another t-shirt or painting or Uber for dog grooming or a vacation.

They NEED the tree removed, their toilet to work again, a place to store their stuff, etc.

Sell them what they need.

@divya_venn @paraschopra I think these can all be figured out through first principles. They are difficult questions for sure, and ones that require deep introspection, but definitely can be answered.

@shreyas Great point. And in my experience, the biggest blocker for a PM to get there is to be free from insecurity about what value they're adding. And if a lot of PMs in a team struggle with this, it points to a systemic team/culture issue.

@PawelHuryn MVPs != Beta/Dogfood products. The other bit about MVPs that most people struggle to wrap their head around is that sometimes the entire MVP has to be scrapped once it's fulfilled its purpose, which is to validate your assumptions.

@championswimmer @dharmeshba This was the crux of the shit take. He just came across as a frustrated privileged capitalist in that post. 10 min delivery may or may not be a real need. But in no circumstances can you shift the failure of the business onto the consumer. That's kinda an oxymoron in itself.

The recommendation engine is just next level.
Easy to set the mood by just starting one song and let it do the rest.
It gets when you are slow+hopeful versus slow+sad.

@os7borne @BookMyForex @makemytrip @makemytripcare The problem is the fulfillment of the order happens through local players and that's why their orders fall through sometimes. They end up refunding later on though but the hassle is not worth it.

@pacificleo ...built, there needs to be more value to the consumer than just watching the streamer shop because otherwise that would be gloating. Unboxing videos work because they are positioned as an informational video critiquing the product while subtly they're just flexing.

@pacificleo This is a good insight. There's also the bit that while carrying shoppers/luxury goods signal status, it's done in a way where it isn't seen as gloating. Notice how the celebs try to play it cool with the paps.
