Polytechnics Canada welcomes today's announcement by the Honourable @PattyHajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, of an additional $2 billion federal investment under Team Canada Strong. The funding is intended to help provinces and territories expand apprenticeship and technical training capacity, improve access to Red Seal trades programs, reduce waitlists and increase completion rates.
Today's announcement addresses a longstanding advocacy priority of Polytechnics Canada: expanding technical training capacity is essential to improving apprenticeship completion rates and meeting Canada's growing demand for skilled trades workers. By investing in provincial and territorial training systems, the government is taking an important step toward addressing the capacity constraints that limit apprentice progression and certification.
Strengthening training capacity is critical to overcoming persistent challenges within Canada's apprenticeship system and ensuring more apprentices can access technical training when they need it, progress through their programs and complete their certification. Improved apprenticeship outcomes will be essential to achieving Canada's housing, infrastructure and defence objectives.
Polytechnics Canada member institutions train approximately 70 per cent of apprentices who participate in technical training each year. As a result, expanding capacity at polytechnics is one of the most effective ways to reduce bottlenecks in the apprenticeship system, accelerate certification and strengthen Canada's skilled trades workforce. Increased investment in training capacity will help ensure Canada has the skilled workers needed to meet current and future labour market demands and deliver on its national ambitions.
