How can technology support safer and more resilient Northern communities?
@SaskPolytech 's Digital Integration Centre of Excellence is working with Alpha-EL Inc., a northern First Nations-owned company developing remote surveillance systems.
The collaboration applies engineering and data expertise to wildlife monitoring, wildfire detection and flood-risk assessment in the Yukon.
It is a strong example of Indigenous-led innovation supported by polytechnic research capacity, combining local priorities with technology that can strengthen environmental monitoring, land stewardship and emergency preparedness.

Last week, Polytechnics Canada and the Presidents of Canada’s top polytechnic institutions met with Minister @PattyHajdu for an important conversation about strengthening Canada’s skills system and ensuring Canadians have the training they need to succeed in a changing economy.
We discussed four key priorities:
- Recognizing the central role of polytechnics in Team Canada Strong and in apprenticeship training, attraction and retention
- Embedding polytechnics in Workforce Alliances so they are grounded in current employer needs, relevant curriculum and existing training capacity
- Making mid-career upskilling more accessible
- Building a coordinated defence-skills system that uses existing civilian training capacity
Canada’s leading polytechnic institutions are ready to work with the federal government, employers and communities to turn these priorities into practical pathways for Canadians and to help build the skilled workforce Canada needs for a strong, resilient future.
Thank you to Minister Hajdu for the opportunity to advance this important conversation.

This is polytechnic education in action: partnering with communities to solve real challenges, build local capacity and create lasting impact.
@SaskPolytech ’s collaboration with Montreal Lake Cree Nation shows the power of bringing applied research, technology and community knowledge together. By creating dynamic digital maps while training community members to update them using drones, the project is building local capacity that can support emergency response, land-use planning, environmental stewardship and economic opportunity for years to come.
This is why Canada must continue investing in polytechnics and their unique role as trusted partners in communities - strengthening communities and building the skilled workforce Canada needs.

One of the most persistent myths in leadership is that effective leaders can see around corners. When we tell stories about successful leaders, we often make it sound as though they knew exactly where things were headed all along. https://t.co/zBjL6aG3oj

Sask Polytech welcomes the federal government's announcement of an additional $2B investment to help provinces and territories expand apprenticeship and technical training capacity. Polytechnics are uniquely positioned to support apprenticeship education. https://t.co/IHTIMr0jnQ
Polytechnics Canada welcomes today's announcement by the Honourable @PattyHajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families, of an additional $2 billion federal investment under Team Canada Strong. The funding is intended to help provinces and territories expand apprenticeship and technical training capacity, improve access to Red Seal trades programs, reduce waitlists and increase completion rates.
Today's announcement addresses a longstanding advocacy priority of Polytechnics Canada: expanding technical training capacity is essential to improving apprenticeship completion rates and meeting Canada's growing demand for skilled trades workers. By investing in provincial and territorial training systems, the government is taking an important step toward addressing the capacity constraints that limit apprentice progression and certification.
Strengthening training capacity is critical to overcoming persistent challenges within Canada's apprenticeship system and ensuring more apprentices can access technical training when they need it, progress through their programs and complete their certification. Improved apprenticeship outcomes will be essential to achieving Canada's housing, infrastructure and defence objectives.
Polytechnics Canada member institutions train approximately 70 per cent of apprentices who participate in technical training each year. As a result, expanding capacity at polytechnics is one of the most effective ways to reduce bottlenecks in the apprenticeship system, accelerate certification and strengthen Canada's skilled trades workforce. Increased investment in training capacity will help ensure Canada has the skilled workers needed to meet current and future labour market demands and deliver on its national ambitions.
