Today I had one of those wonderful days when you are recognized and sought after for your expertise. I was asked to join a center grant because I have the unique combined strengths of big data analytics and community engaged/based research.
Today, I participated in “Faith for Black Lives Matter” peaceful protest. As folks were walking onto the State House grounds, they played “Preach” by John Legend. It was so moving that tears ran down my face...#BlackLivesMattters
Yesterday, I had to tell an amazing woman and academic good-bye. @BlondeScientist will be moving to St. Judes Cancer Center to lead their HPV Vac initiatives. We had a special guest who made a surprise appearance to wish her well in her new role. @UofSCNursing@SC_CPCRN
This is the new “normal” for dissertation defenses- Dr. Bevel and his committee. On a positive note- virtual defenses mean that family members can now be a part of the process. It was great to see the Bevel family supporting their student!
@WhitneyZahnd The skills that you have to develop as a health researcher are highly specialized and honestly quite difficult and complex methodology that I think that it is important to convey this rare skill set. No different than calling yourself a cancer epi, MCH epi, etc
So very proud to announce that my student DR. Malcolm Bevel successfully defended his dissertation today!!!! I am looking forward to the impact his work will have on the health of African Americans...
So excited to share some recent work examining endocrine therapy adherence in breast cancer survivors. It highlights the work still needed to close the gaps in racial and geographic cancer disparities. https://t.co/2iLZTJ2mAe @UofSCNursing@UofSC@DEANUSCNURSING

My sweet, organized child’s response to the COVID-19 school closings- getting organized for remote learning!! She is doing her part to “flatten the curve”...❤️❤️❤️
This is a great figure that describes why we are taking measures to close schools, athletics, and other events. Please do your part to contribute to “flattening the curve”! https://t.co/Yp4lVvgPWd
Trying to make the best of COVID-19 university closings! Computer-check! Soothing Buddha fountain-check! Cooling fan-check! And birdsong for music-check!!! 😁😁😁 @UofSCNursing@UofSC@SC_CPCRN
I am very excited to share a recently published work that examines travel distance and cervical cancer screening in Federally Qualified Health Centers as part of the @SC_CPCRN and the national network of cancer D & I experts, @CPCRNcancer. https://t.co/XlmergMJWC
It is my privilege and honor to introduce Dr. Oluwole (Wole) Babatunde who was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology today. It has been a beautiful 5 year journey with him and I know that he will go far. I love his grin in this picture...
Another of my doctoral students successfully defended her dissertation today! Congratulations to Dr. Lisa Webb!!! More to come as she/we publish this important work...
I want to send a big congratulations to my PhD student, Malcolm Bevel, on successfully defending his dissertation proposal today. So proud of him as he begins this final phase of his degree program! I am looking forward to sharing his important work soon!
