One of the core tensions in foreign aid:

We start with the US attention on sepsis after the tragic Kyle Busch case—and then go where the crisis is overwhelming: maternal and newborn deaths from sepsis in the Global South.

In many poor settings, a mother and newborn are an “inviolable dyad”: if the mother dies or is very sick in childbirth, her baby’s odds of surviving the first year collapse.

Neonatal sepsis: ~3M cases a year globally, with deaths heavily concentrated in Sub‑Saharan Africa and South Asia.

A 2020 Lancet study found about 85% of sepsis cases and deaths occur in those regions.

This isn’t just about foreign aid. Untreated infections are degrading the same antibiotics US ICUs rely on.

Kyle Busch’s death was publicly reported as pneumonia that progressed into sepsis. Most similar deaths are still labeled ‘pneumonia’ or ‘meningitis’ instead of sepsis, even when organ failure is driven by the body’s response to infection. Naming sepsis matters.
