i’m so fucking tired of men assessing women by the same rubric they use for themselves, as if we’ve all been moving through the same world.

you see a woman in the same job, at the same party, in the same room as you, and assume she got there with the same freedom you did. bhai, how?

i have twenty things to think about that you may never have had to consider. i cannot fall asleep in a cab because i need to watch where it’s going. i don’t book flights that land here late. if i order Zomato after 2 a.m., i make sure the delivery person knows i have a dog at home, so they don’t think i’m alone. when i walk at night, i feel safer with my dog because some men are more afraid of him than of the consequences of hurting me.

i’ve had palpitations living alone. but i do. i’ve been sexually assaulted in my own house, previously. so please understand that these aren’t hypotheticals i’m inventing to win an argument. these are calculations running in the background while i’m working, making friends, having conversations, trying to live my fucking life.

and i have privileges. i’m not Dalit. i grew up with financial security and an education. there are women navigating caste, money, family restrictions and violence in ways i cannot claim to understand. being in the same room as someone tells you fuck all about what it took them to get there.

so how are some of you this comfortable looking at a woman and deciding she isn’t bold enough, accomplished enough, interesting enough, whatever the fuck your measure is? (not quoting that tweet cause I’m not about to give a man that distribution advantage, either) have you ever stopped to ask what she’s had to navigate to become the person standing in front of you?

you’re allowed to find an individual person boring. but women around me are talking about assault, rape and how unsafe they feel in this country, and some man’s grand intellectual contribution is that the women in his life aren’t entertaining enough.

what the fuck is wrong with you? and why are the rest of you treating that like a serious hot take?
