It has become increasingly evident that the FGS has effectively handed over the Awdal file to IOG rather than local leadership.
A desperate autocrat seeking any remaining leverage to prolong an already interminable rule.
Can he be trusted? Based on his past actions, I think not.
Tensions inside Djibouti escalated last year when IOG amended the constitution to pursue a sixth term, despite being over 75. Many were upset.
Events in #Saylac became the perfect distraction: he pushed clan elders to declare war in #Awdal from #Diridhaba in December, sparking the current clan conflict.
This move exposed the regimeโs deep insecurity & growing reliance on external crises for political survival.
Modern border btw the two regions are formed by the following treaties:
1. Anglo-French Treaty of 1888
2. Franco-Gadabuursi Treaty 1885 signed in #Saylac by Ughaz Nur II
3. Franco-Issa Treaty 1885 signed in #Obock.
The DjiboutiโAwdal relationship goes beyond politics or power struggles. IOG views Awdal & wider Somalia as an existential threat for two main reasons:
1. Both occupy the same strategic theatre: #HoA, #BabElMandeb & #GulfofAden
2. Both are linked to landlocked #Ethiopia, a rapidly growing market connected to #BRICS that desperately needs sea access.
Consequently, Awdal with ports or trade routes is a direct economic threat. In other words, Djiboutiโs strategic importance is not exclusive but shared with Awdal.
IOG economic policies are anchored on monopolising ports, corridors & transit routes to Ethiopia. Addis Ababa has eyed Awdal for years, particularly Lughaye.
IOG has long maintained close ties to Hargeisa, even providing Somaliland officials with ๐ฉ๐ฏ passports.
Part of this arrangement: no ports in Awdal between #Djibouti & #Berbera, preventing competition in #Saylac or #Lughaya.
IOG works with Somaliland but stops short of recognition not out of support for Somali unity but to create a limbo. How? Supporting Hargeisa weakens Mogadishu while opposing recognition weakens Hargeisa. Win-win.
He doesnโt oppose unity, he opposes a stable #Somalia with control over its coastline.
IOG opposes any autonomous decision-making in Awdal, having crushed Awdal state with the separatists for 15 years!
IOG ensures Awdalโs political fate is always mediated through him. An example being 2024, when he quietly sidelined Awdal state.
Amid the turmoil caused by Israelโs unilateral recognition of Hargeisa, he sees a chance. The Guban project aims to erase Awdal & neutralise Somaliaโs presence, crush separatists & tie the region to Djibouti short of annexation. A Jubaland-style FMS & effectively maintain monopoly.
Ultimately, itโs clear Villa Somalia has no understanding of the region. I mean Fiqi is posting & deleting tweets!
This isnโt the way to gain support in Awdal & create a FMS. This will ONLY cement long-term clan violence for short-term political goals & distrust of Mogadishu.
PRESS RELEASE
This Is the Moment - Awdal and Gebileh Youth, Stand for Your Land, Pride, and Dignity.
This statement is issued to correct deliberate historical falsification, political manipulation, and the systematic assault on the dignity, rights, and sovereignty of the people of Awdal Region and Gebileh District, whom I represent in Parliament.
Let the facts be stated clearly and without distortion - Adal (ADAL) Empire was not a myth. It was a sovereign civilization that ruled Djibouti, Zeila, and vast territories across the Horn of Africa, and it entered formal treaty relations with Great Britain in 1884. Our land, our authority, and our political identity existed long before modern colonial borders. What happened afterward was colonial partition:
One part taken by France (Djibouti),
One part taken by Britain (British Somaliland),
One part absorbed by Ethiopia.
This was colonial dismemberment, not consent, not choice, and not legitimacy.
Today, the Federal Government of Somalia under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is repeating colonial injustice through internal political corruption and foreign subservience.
A Political Crime Against Awdal - The current administration has weaponized ุงูุจุฑูู ุงู (Parliament) to manufacture false territorial claims inside Awdal using a group of nine MPs from the Issa (Isse) community, whose population constitutes less than 2% of Awdalโs demographic reality.
These seats were politically gifted, not democratically earned, during the formation of the Third Republic in Djibouti - a corrupt political bargain designed to protect business and financial interests, not justice, not representation, and not constitutional order.
Two days ago, these MPs conducted a conference call claiming a non-existent โstate๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ inside Awdal, falsely declaring Zeila and Lughaya as their โterritoryโ and even calling them their โcapital.โ This is not politics - this is territorial fraud.
Let the truth be stated plainly - There is not a single neighborhood, market, port facility, commercial district, or residential quarter in Zeila or Lughaya owned by the Issa community. These cities are historically, socially, and demographically Gadabuursi land. The claims being made are fiction, not history, not law, and not reality.
Constitutional Reality - The Provisional Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia is explicit. Somalia is composed of the 18 regions that existed before the collapse of the Democratic Republic of Somalia in 1991.
There is no constitutional provision for:
clan-based micro-states
invented internal โstatesโ
ethnic land partition
tribal sovereignty projects
What these MPs are doing is open constitutional violation and internal secessionist incitement.
Foreign Interference and Regional Subservience - Even more dangerous is the role of President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, who has directly encouraged these claims - the same president who previously attempted similar land and influence grabs against Gadabuursi communities. This is foreign interference in Somaliaโs internal sovereignty, and it is being enabled by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and his political enforcer, Defense Minister Ahmed Fiqi, both politically aligned, financially entangled, and politically subordinate to Djiboutiโs regional influence.
This is not diplomacy - it is subservience.
This is not leadership - it is political outsourcing of Somali sovereignty.
Betrayal from Within - Even more shameful is the silence of some MPs from Awdal itself - individuals who enjoy the privileges of office but lack the courage to defend their people.
Their silence in the face of:
land grabbing,
constitutional violations,
foreign interference,
historical erasure is political cowardice and moral bankruptcy.
History will not forgive silence.
Communities do not forget betrayal.
Dignity cannot coexist with submission.
My Position Is Clear and Non-Negotiable
Awdal is not for sale.
Gebileh is not for negotiation.
Zeila is not a fantasy capital.
Lughaya is not a political gift.
Somalia is not a bargaining chip for foreign presidents.
The Constitution is not optional.
Sovereignty is not tribal property.
No president, no foreign leader, no corrupt coalition, and no manufactured parliamentary bloc has the authority to redraw Somali land through fraud, intimidation, or political deals.
My Message to Awdal and Gebileh Youth
This is not politics.
This is not party business.
This is not government talk.
This is not elite games.
This is about YOU.
Your land.
Your name.
Your future.
Your identity.
Your dignity.
Your soul.
They want you silent.
They want you confused.
They want you divided.
They want you tired.
They want you afraid.
They want you numb.
Because a youth who forgets who they are
is easy to control.
Know Who You Are
You are not guests on your own land.
You are not tenants in your own history.
You are not migrants in your own home.
You are not beggars for your own identity.
You come from Adal.
You come from a civilization.
You come from builders.
You come from rulers.
You come from defenders.
Zeila is not a slogan - itโs your history.
Gebileh is not a border - itโs your blood.
Lughaya is not a map point - itโs your memory.
Awdal is not a district - itโs your identity.
You donโt inherit shame.
You inherit strength.
You inherit land.
You inherit honor.
You inherit memory.
You inherit responsibility.
They Are Trying to Erase You
Not with bullets.
Not with bombs.
Not with armies.
But with:
fake narratives
false claims
tribal propaganda
political lies
manufactured states
identity confusion
historical rewriting
They want to make you forget
who you are
so they can take
what is yours.
Because when a people forget their history, their land is next.
This Is Your Generationโs Test
Every generation has a moment.
This is yours.
Not a war of guns -
a war of identity.
Not a war of armies -
a war of memory.
Not a war of borders -
a war of belonging.
Not a war of power -
a war of existence.
If you stay silent -
others will speak for you.
If you stay divided -
others will rule you.
If you stay afraid -
others will erase you.
Stand Up
Stand for your land.
Stand for your people.
Stand for your elders.
Stand for your history.
Stand for your dignity.
Stand for your future.
Donโt wait for permission.
Donโt wait for leaders.
Donโt wait for politics.
Donโt wait for approval.
Identity does not need permission.
Dignity does not need approval.
Belonging does not need recognition.
You Are Not a Lost Generation
You are a chosen generation.
Chosen to protect memory.
Chosen to defend identity.
Chosen to carry history.
Chosen to guard land.
Chosen to protect dignity.
Chosen to preserve existence.
Your voice is a weapon.
Your unity is a shield.
Your knowledge is power.
Your courage is defense.
Your pride is resistance.
Final Message
You donโt fight because you hate others.
You stand because you love who you are.
You donโt resist because you seek conflict.
You resist because you refuse erasure.
You donโt mobilize for politics.
You mobilize for belonging.
Awdal is not a story - it is a home.
Gebileh is not a claim - it is a reality.
Zeila is not a memory - it is a legacy.
Lughaya is not a symbol - it is a life.
This is your land.
This is your identity.
This is your inheritance.
This is your future.
Protect it.
Defend it.
Honor it.
Carry it.
Live it.
Because if you donโt stand for who you are,
someone else will decide who you become.
And we will not let that happen.
Not now.
Not ever.

I struggle to name anything in modern politics more humiliating than watching some "Somalilanders" cheer for their so-called โrecognitionโ from a terror state
#Bosaso is being used as a tool to harm the Sudanese people. Seeing โBosasoโ on that list really hurts, both Said Deni and Hassan Sheikh are complicit in this betrayal against #Sudan.
Shifa, someone I care about deeply, was kidnapped & held w/o due process alongside other activists is being threatened with torture. What Ben-Gvir threatened is just a fraction of what they do to Palestinians.
We need intl pressure to end the Genocide & release ALL prisoners.
Did not know a Somali-Finnish sister was on the Flotilla!
So proud of her and her efforts!
Somalis have a long and proud history of supporting Palestinian liberation.
Yesโmen grieve deeply after breakups.
But they grieve differently.
You see, society doesn't give men the space to break down publicly.
They're taught to "man up," "move on," and "never show weakness."
So instead of crying with friends, they sit in silence.
Instead of talking it out, they lift heavier weights.
Instead of grieving openly, they suffer in isolation.
Why do they seem fine?
Because men are conditioned to suppress emotions.
They distract themselves with work, sex, the gym, or silence.
But late at night, when no one is watching?
Thatโs when it hits.
The memories.
The regrets.
The emptiness.
Men feel everything.
They just donโt show it the same way.
And hereโs the twist:
Most men donโt process the breakup until months later.
Thatโs when the mask slips.
Thatโs when the pain floods in.
So yes, men grieve.
But in a world where emotional expression is called weakness,
they've learned to bleed quietly.
