@SaveNottmLib One of the managers involved in trying to shut down the Aspley library told me it was because the library was not being used. It’s on the edge of a huge “council estate”. She pushed for the new Sherwood library in preference to it. Typical #CultOfManagerialism incompetence.
@PonyPonyPony4 They're MUCH cheaper than the shared service centres to run. But they're not linked to dodgy & expensive PFI deals so that's why hours get cut to impact the footfall & then reduced footfall is used to push for closures. Nottingham Labour are awful for working class communities.
In Nottingham when we fought 3 library closures in 2022 the equality impact assessments were damning. It was VERY obvious libraries targeted were in areas that had the most need for resources & support. The same 3 libraries & another in a similar area are under threat again.
Such an eye-opener, I don’t think library closures had been mapped against index of multiple deprivation before.Surely equality impact assessment should have picked this up. Need to fix council underfunding. https://t.co/K0MQ9kmSDP
@CILIPinfo@BBCr4today @richove Paid, professional library staff are essential for an accountable and professional library system. Volunteers do great work but every library should have a paid, professional librarian present. A school would never be run by volunteers - why should libraries?
On @BBCr4today @richove calls on Govt to address 'critical' issues in #Libraries. "Responsibility is held by Govt to provide a comprehensive & efficient library service" - service needs to be more 'joined up' - an "infrastructure for democracy" From 02:23 https://t.co/TfBw0HDbD5
The library minister also has statutory duty to 'promote the improvement of the public library service' - both duties can be interpreted with far greater ambition
@ayubkhan786 Local/national campaigners & unions have been using deprivation indices etc to argue against library cuts and closures for years, I wrote a guide to doing this for ‘Speak up for Libraries’. Most EIA’s like consultations aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.
📚Nottingham libraries latest:
🟢 Snags preventing opening of "much-delayed" Sherwood Library to be fixed in next 3 weeks
🟢 Libraries consultation got 5k responses. Alternatives to closures being considered

@SaveNottmLib@BBCr4today The Labour led Nottingham City council is planning to close yet more libraries - it is clear that @UKLabour has no vision for libraries seeing them as a burden not an agent of social mobility
If you use a Nottingham library, especially if you use one of the libraries under threat of closure, we encourage you to please respond to this survey from @guardian asking how libraries shape your life. Reply here too if you'd like to share with us 💚📚💜

@daveboulton@MichaelRosenYes@chrisriddell50@ng_labour@MyNottingham@LilianGreenwood In 2022 when 3 Nottm libraries were under threat of closure we were told it's because of unfair council funding from central government leaving Nottm & similar places disadvantaged. Now we have a Labour government & 4 libraries under threat of closure. Why bother voting Labour?
"Closing libraries is an act of cruelty" - @MichaelRosenYes illustration from @chrisriddell50
We absolutely agree which is why we're trying our hardest to ensure @ng_labour@MyNottingham do not close 4 libraries in our city! Support our campaign here:

@daveboulton@MichaelRosenYes@chrisriddell50@ng_labour@MyNottingham@LilianGreenwood Meaningless unless she's actively working to secure proper funding for Nottm to save libraries. She has not met our campaign since we relaunched & while the supportive statements she sends in place of meeting are good, her Labour government funding services would be better.
“Modesty may be part of libraries’ DNA, but this doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to shout about.”: the new edition of the Bookseller is libraries-themed. https://t.co/X2mYl5QehV
Very much tracks with the situation in Nottingham. Councillors pretended to be offended when we asked why cuts were being targeted in working class areas. And yet they are. Support our campaign, sign our petition here:

Important new analysis from @BBCNews reveals extent of library cuts since 2016. The poorest areas are around four times more likely to lose a local library than the richest. Our CEO @HunterIsobel is quoted https://t.co/OsJgpbOJQQ
This is an enormous scandal and needs to be a priority for the new Government. Libraries are absolutely vital community assets, particularly in the most deprived past of the country. We’re proud to champion them through @WarmWelcome_UK
How does this work when you are simultaneously proposing to close libraries? Upgrades to where? Aspley? Basford? Bilborough? Radford Lenton? Or do you still intend to close these?
