¿Qué es lo que crea la civilización? Como dijo Lee Kuan Yew al erradicar los comportamientos propios del Tercer Mundo: «[Les dijimos] dejen de escupir, dejen de tirar basura... no pueden ir orinando por todas partes como hacían en los barrios».

La imposición rigurosa de esas normas y expectativas transformó a Singapur de una aldea inmunda en una de las ciudades-estado más prósperas de la Tierra.

Nosotros hemos hecho todo lo contrario. En lugar de establecer y hacer cumplir normas de comportamiento civilizado, hemos cedido a la ilusión de tolerar (y, en algunos ámbitos, incluso fomentar) toda clase de conductas deplorables - concretamente la suciedad, el vagabundeo, la dejadez, el consumo de drogas y la delincuencia - que actualmente empañan al país.

Así, hemos optado por quedarnos en el Tercer Mundo, justo cuando Singapur pasaba del Tercer Mundo al Primero.

Eso debe revertirse. Es posible revertirlo. Y lo que hace falta es fuerza de voluntad, la firmeza inquebrantable necesaria para establecer y mantener el orden. Nada más, ni nada menos.
