Margaret Turley, a true champion, began her Special Olympics journey in her hometown of Kilkenny, Ireland, where she quickly excelled in swimming, athletics, basketball and bocce. Beyond her sporting achievements, Margaret is deeply passionate about advocating for people’s rights, especially the rights of individuals with disabilities.
She is currently one of over 20 Special Olympics athletes in Brussels, taking part in the inaugural Special Olympics European Union Day, where she is doing one of the things she loves most: speaking up for inclusion and equality.
“Special Olympics European Union Day is a unique opportunity to show Europe's policymakers not just the challenges we face, but also the incredible potential that inclusion unlocks. It is important for people with intellectual disabilities to speak directly to policymakers, because no one understands our needs and aspirations better than we do ourselves.”
“I am deeply grateful to the European Union for hosting this event and for recognizing that inclusion strengthens communities, empowers people, and inspires positive change across our continent."
