@FionaLondonarts@halseyszurich Noise cancelling headphones are worth every penny. Combined with playing brown noise if you're working will keep you sane.
The Falklands (Malvinas) had no indigenous population. Britain established a settlement in 1765 and never formally relinquished its claim. Spain withdrew in 1811.
Argentina proclaimed sovereignty in 1820 and backed Luis Vernet’s private commercial venture in the late 1820s. That collapsed after a US warship destroyed it in 1831. In Oct 1832 Argentina sent a small 26-soldier garrison (plus families). It lasted ~3 months amid mutiny.
Jan 1833: HMS Clio arrived, asked the Argentine military to lower their flag and depart. They left peacefully; no shots fired. Civilian settlers were invited to remain under British administration. Most of the “expulsion of Argentines” narrative refers only to that short-lived garrison.
Britain has administered continuously since. The current population (~3,500) is overwhelmingly British-descended and chose to remain British in the 2013 referendum (99.8%). Self-determination is the key modern principle.
Argentina’s claim rests on Spanish succession and proximity. It’s a genuine dispute, but the 1833 facts are not what the “inhabited under Argentine authority / British had no rights” version claims.
