I have one of those truly treatment-resistant and volatile cases of bipolar 1 disorder that finally, after 11+ years, stabilized because of a #KetogenicDiet. Remission seemed like a myth or, at best, a cruelly-unattainable state/goal. At my lowest and most suicidal…1/5
🧵Dr. Maya Schumer’s Story: A Neuroscientist’s Journey from Suicidality to Stability
After 11 years of hospitalizations, suicidality, and treatment-resistant bipolar disorder, Dr. Maya Schumer, who holds a PhD in neuroscience, experienced something she never thought possible:
Lasting stability.
Here’s how she got there 👇 @SchumerMaya
This video from the American Psychiatric Association is something I wasn't sure I'd ever see the likes of.
Thank you @janellison for catalysing this shift.
I was sleeping in a lifeguard tower on a beach in Los Angeles.
I had a bag of clothes, my laptop, and about three weeks of homelessness behind me. And I was floridly psychotic. I woke up in a Denny's one morning with no memory of how I got there. I was posting rap videos on Snapchat because I believed I was going to be famous.
My dad found me at a Starbucks. My parents had been looking for me for days.
That was the beginning of my fourth and final psychiatric hospitalization. I was 21.
Three years later my mom found research on ketogenic diets for bipolar disorder. I went ketogenic. The mania stopped. I haven't been hospitalized since.
I'm telling you this because somewhere, right now, there is a parent who has been told their child is treatment-resistant. That this is just going to be their life.
There is hope in ketogenic and metabolic therapies.
“For the first time since I can remember, I felt the weight of depression lift from my mind.”
🎥 In this video, leading clinicians, researchers, and experts by experience share how ketogenic therapy is being used to support brain health and improve depressive symptoms, especially in cases where traditional treatments have fallen short.

Can a ketogenic diet really improve mental health?
In this video, @bschermd breaks down a new piece published in @nytimes highlighting some of the existing early research looking at ketogenic therapy for serious mental illness alongside several success stories from members of the Metabolic Mind community.
We are thankful to the many incredible researchers and practitioners who have helped pioneer the field of metabolic psychiatry, including those featured in this article like @ChrisPalmerMD, @ShebaniMD, and @IainCampbellPhD. We're also grateful to the many individuals who have been willing to openly share their personal experiences to inspire others who could benefit from ketogenic therapy.
Thank you for all that you do, Jan. No-one has been a stronger advocate for patients or has done more to advance research into genuinely new treatment modalities in psychiatry.
Setbacks in mental health recovery aren’t failure; they’re part of the process. 🧠
In this video, Dr. Matt Bernstein explains why downturns are normal, how to prepare for them, and how the right mindset can turn challenges into growth in your mental health journey.
5/ Hear details of the strategies @SchumerMaya has shared with @Metabolic_Mind. Her experience was highlighted in the @nytimes article on ketogenic therapy for mental illness this morning. https://t.co/hDgm1lCDv6
Just about everyone knows someone with a mental health condition who is not getting completely better with standard mental health care.
New and innovative treatments should be embraced and encouraged.
Millions of people are waiting and hoping.
Big moment for metabolic psychiatry and ketogenic therapy for serious mental illness.

Today’s @nytimes piece highlights early research from Stanford University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Edinburgh — alongside the stories of individuals who have shared their lived experience here on Metabolic Mind.
This kind of visibility matters. It reflects years of work by researchers and clinicians like @ChrisPalmerMD, @ShebaniMD, and @IainCampbellPhD, research funded by @BaszuckiGroup, advocates like @janellison, as well as the many people who have been willing to share their personal stories.
Lived experience alone isn’t enough. Early data alone isn’t enough. But together, they point to something that must be tested, confirmed — or challenged — through high-quality science. That’s why we are excited about several RCTs currently completed or underway around the world.
We need to continue efforts to advance education, public awareness and research on a scale that will require public funding. That’s how medicine moves forward. And that’s the exciting work ahead.
1/ Today, @alicegcallahan from the New York Times @nytimes published an article on ketogenic diets and serious mental illness. It feels fitting. (link below)
It was exactly ten years ago today that our son @matthewbaszucki, at age 19, was involuntarily admitted to Stanford's psychiatric hospital for manic psychosis. After a diagnosis of Bipolar I and a five year battle with debilitating symptoms, he found @ChrisPalmerMD and started ketogenic and metabolic therapies. His symptoms have been in remission since early 2021, and today, he is still in ketosis and is thriving.
I just had the pleasure of watching Matthew present his story on stage at @realCSF's #CoSci26 conference in Las Vegas. His health, vitality, confidence and insight brought me to tears. He also participated on a panel about his experience with other inspiring individuals @DrEricRodgers@robynrdobbins who appear in our upcoming film from @wideeyetv@jenisenhart@realDaveFeldman, The Cholesterol Code, which premiered last Saturday and received a well-deserved standing ovation. (link below)
The Times article highlighted three of our family foundation @BaszuckiGroup's funded published studies (Stanford, The Ohio State University, and U. Edinburgh) and the stories of two individuals who, like our son, found hope in ketogenic therapy and who have generously shared their stories and strategies with @Metabolic_Mind's THINK+SMART program (links below).
My fifth decade started as the hardest of my life and ended as the most rewarding. I am deeply grateful to the work of metabolic psychiatry pioneers @ChrisPalmerMD@GeorgiaEdeMD@SethiSheba74345 and others who made my son's healing possible, to the researchers around the world studying the connection between metabolic and mental health, and to our entire team at Baszucki Group and Metabolic Mind for their dedication to this cause.
We're on the brink of a new era in the treatment of mental illness. Godspeed to the ongoing research, clinical adoption, and sharing of personal stories that could help tens of millions of people around the world.
