Our paper is now published in @NatMentHealth.
What began as curiosity in med school became a field I later named: metabolic psychiatry. 15+ years later, it's defining a new category of care.
@LabsMetabolism is translating this into patient care.

Honored to give an endowed lecture at WashU on metabolic psychiatry—sharing clinical applications and its growing role in modern care. Fittingly, Gerty Cori (Cori Cycle), the first American woman Nobel laureate, advanced metabolism here.

LIVE FROM THE OVAL: President Trump Announces Historic Reforms to Accelerate Access to Medical Research & Treatments Based on Psychedelic Drugs
"Since 9/11, we've lost over 21 times more veteran lives to suicide than on the battlefield... today, we're bringing them new hope."
STAT recently covered metabolic psychiatry.
A core point: metabolic health is almost never evaluated in psychiatric care.
When the brain consumes 20% of the body's energy, that's a gap we can't keep ignoring.

Today, CMS issued a memo to every hospital telling them to stop serving sugary drinks + inflammatory processed food to patients or risk federal reimbursement.
Bold, common sense action that will save lives.
We are anxiously awaiting how the media spins this negatively.
Baszucki Group is hosting a workshop at #SIRS2026 highlighting emerging metabolic psychiatry approaches for schizophrenia. We’ll share insights from recent pilot trials, discuss real-world implementation, and hear from a lived experience perspective energized by new hope for treatment options.
Join our panelists @ShebaniMD@ErinLBellamy@ProfDeannaK, Wednesday, March 25 at 3:30 CET in Room Verde!
@BaszuckiGroup@nytimes@StanfordMed@OhioState@EdinburghUni Continued investment in rigorous research is what will move metabolic psychiatry from an emerging field to standard clinical practice. Important work from the Baszucki Group and others advancing this.
The science behind @LabMetabolism (MPL) is in NYT today.
Our research on treating mental illness through keto is one tool in metabolic psychiatry. MPL exists to bring this science to patients who need it most.

I am grateful to the New York Times @nytimes for including a mention of our son @matthewbaszucki's story and a link to our foundation, Metabolic Mind, in recent coverage of the question of whether ketogenic diets can "cure" schizophrenia. After five years of illness, Matt began using ketogenic therapy for bipolar disorder in 2021. He has been in remission from symptoms for nearly five years.
I am working on a longer response, but for now, please visit our Metabolic Mind dot org website for information on the emerging science, practice and personal stories surrounding the use of ketogenic and metabolic therapies for serious mental illnesses like bipolar and schizophrenia, along with other mental disorders.
Was our son "cured" of bipolar disorder with a ketogenic diet? That's not a term we typically use, but to me, that's also not the most important question.
The focus must remain on the scientific and clinical questions of how ketogenic interventions work mechanistically, who might be helped, and how they can find that help. Those are the questions our family, our team @BaszuckiGroup and @metabolicmind, and those pioneering the field of #MetabolicPsychiatry are dedicated to helping answer.

I want to thank so many colleagues who helped us get here:
The great work from @AdrianSotoMota has helped us put our data into replicable research - I cannot convey how talented and impressive he is
We had the pleasure and the honor to work with @ShebaniMD whose patience and leadership helped produce a meaningful addition to the food addiction and binge eating literature
We also want to thank @bigfatsurprise for her strong leadership in this field and for being a guiding light for science, journalism and policy chance
There are so many others to thank but I wanted to highlight these three amazing folks
Dr. Sethi launched Metabolic Psychiatry Labs to make this accessible nationwide. Stanford is scaling research.

@drmarkhyman Thank you @drmarkhyman for opening space for this conversation. I enjoyed the flow of our discussion on how metabolism and mental health are deeply connected. Looking forward to further discussion on collaboration as we expand research and clinical pathways.
